Dial on demand with smpppd
I have an 8.0 system that I'm trying to get smpppd to do dial on demand. It seems that it's just supposed to work, because I have found very little that explains how it works, how to configure it, and what to do to troubleshoot things when it doesn't work. The man pages talk about the configuration files mostly, and the few brief paragraphs in the 8.0 SuSE Linux Reference are no help. Nothing useful came out of a Google and SDB search, either. I configured the modem with Yast2, defined a provider, supplied a user name and password, etc. That all seemed to work; smpppd is running, wvdial is installed (I think it needs that.) Nothing happens. For example, when I ping an external IP address, the message connect: Network is unreachable is printed. Questions: 1. Is there a definitive (and complete) description of the use and configuration of smpppd somewhere? 2. Does it require a dummy network device? If so, how does one go about configuring one, if I originally answered "no" to the offer when installing? 3. Where should the default route point before the ppp session is brought up? 4. Am I asking the wrong questions? Thanks, Jim
