[opensuse] Printer under Leap 15.1
I run Leap 15.1 and need a new printer. It should be a simple black and white laser printer, used be one person only and also having the functionalities of a photocopier and a flat bed scanner. What about connecting it via Bluetooth, or is it better to use a cable? Any recommendations? Not bluetooth. WiFi is OK, but cable is better (faster) - unless a nuisance in your setup.
Any recommendations?
Not this moment. Depends also on your country, models are different. Me likes HP. Another brand was recommended recently, but I forgot which. Not Cannon. Careful with Epson, some models needs special drivers. In any case, verify prior to purchase that there is Linux support via open drivers (community, not brand). There is a page that list printers and another I think lists scanners. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Not particularly, but I question the requirement for a simple B+W laser with scanner and copier. I would be tempted to go for two separate items, a printer and a scanner. Yes, there's [a bit less than] twice the hassle to set up but you can choose whatever best suits your requirement for each function.
Thanks in advance and best regards, Wolfgang

Agree, that's what I did for the office 12-15 years ago. Kyocera colour laser and an HP 2400 scanner. Both have worked fine, with some minor mishaps on Leap42.3. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (4.4°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have near me a Brother DCP-7055W that works beautifully - USB or wifi. the scanner do *not* works on USB*3*, but works on wifi, so I use it fully on wifi (no ethernet on this model) jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Is there any reason why a scanner would need USB3? Is the data rate that high? Surely plugging it in to any USB connection would be fine?

USB3 is backwards compatible with USB2. You can plug blue plugs into white sockets and vice-versa

yes but drivers are not. It may be a very small (timing?) problem, but the fact is... jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Is the data | rate that high? Yes, certainly. The speed needed increases with resolution requested and width of scan. Say, a 15 cm wide photo at 1200 dpi. That's 472 dots per centimetre, thus 7080 pixels. At least 3 bytes each. One cm scan is 472 times that, so 10025280 bytes per cm, approximately 10 megabytes per centimetre of height. That limits the scan speed. Scanners usually do not have (much) memory, they have to transmit each line instantly. When the buffer fills up, they stop scanning and go back a few lines and start again when the buffer empties. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Wolfgang, et al -- ...and then Wolfgang Mueller said... % % I run Leap 15.1 and need a new printer. % % It should be a simple black and white laser printer, used be one ... % better to use a cable? We've been quite satisfied with our Xerox Workcenter 3215. It worked quite well under 42, and I'll be reinstalling under 15.1 soon :-) HTH & HANW :-D -- David T-G See http://justpickone.org/davidtg/email/ See http://justpickone.org/davidtg/tofu.txt -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

First of all, thanks to all of you for your advises and recommendations. After I had found that the built-in printer and scanner drivers are appropriate to obsolete printer models only that are no more in sale, I had to look for vendors that supply SuSE linux drivers. I found out that the best (i.m.h.o.) support is granted by Brother. To-day I bought a Brother DCP-L2530DW, which is a 3-in-1 (i.e. printer, scanner, and photocopier) B+W printer. Then I downloaded the printer and scanner rpm's from Brother's site and installed them. Afterwards I had to invoke yast2 for making the printer the default printer; otherwise the lpr command would not have worked without specifying the printer. Now, all three functionalities (see above) work without groans, and I am actually happy with my new printer, which, by the way, was not very expensive (EUR 167).
