[SLE] Power Off on Shutdown
BTW, it's good to be back....been away from SuSE for 'bout a year while testing out RH, Mandrake and Caldera....ran mostly Mandrake, which distro has come a long way since the "just an optimized RH" days. A killer installer that other distros should really look at, and it recognizes hardware like no other distro I've seen: picked up my HP CDRW on setup, automatically appended LILO with "hdc=ide-scsi", did the necessary dirty work in /etc/fstab and modules files, and it recognized the second CD drive in the system properly, as a straight IDE drive. Not bad. The problem I have with Mandrake is on my Athlon box, where I think certain underlying optimizations made with the pgcc/egcs compiler tend to make things a little unstable sometimes. Not the kernel, but X Windows and certain X apps (most certainly Netscape, which simply freezes completely every five minutes or so). I look forward to the Full Mozilla (better than the Full Monty!!! <lol>), 'cause Mozilla M14 runs amazingly well on this Athlon box. I understand there is some Athlon optimization code in the 2.3.x kernels, so I hope to see that option in the 2.4 kernel. One little thing I miss coming back to SuSE, though, is how RH/Mandrake automatically shut the power off when shutdown is complete. This can't be a difficult option to enable, just haven't been able to find out which config file and which command to add to it may enable this behavior. What command would be added to the shutdown scripts that orders the BIOS to shut off the system? If anyone out there has done this, I'd be interested in the details. If your using 6.4 install the kernel that has the apm support. You may also just recompile your own kernel with apm enabled. In 6.4 there is no special kernel con- fig parameter other than just setting apm to enabled. In 6.3 there was a special kernel config parameter on top of enabling apm for shut-OFF. Just make sure your BIOS has APM enabled, that the kernel has APM included and you installed the APMD utils. My 6.4 box turns itself off quite happily on "Halt" or a scheduled shutdown. On Sat, 29 Apr 2000, Tom Snell wrote:

It's been along time since I did it but try editing /etc/rc.d/halt so the line reads halt -p -p means poweroff Nick -- Nick Zentena "The Linux issue," Wladawsky-Berger explained, "is whether this is a fundamentally disruptive technology, like the microprocessor and the Internet? We're betting that it is." -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Thanks for all the replies, folks! The /etc/rc.d/halt script in 6.4 indeed tests if 'apm' is running in process and then gives the command 'halt -p', so I'll just go ahead and recompile the kernel with 'apm' support (was gonna recompile anyway to pare down the kernel somewhat) then enable 'apm' in the BIOS. What are the requirements on the power supply and motherboard so that software-directed power off is possible at all? For the normal desktop/deskside PC? An ATX power supply and a board has
a connector for it, obviously all ATX boards and also most of the newer
Super7 boards.

You will need to recompile your kernel. The are some options of Automatic Power Management. One of them is to power down on shutdown. Victor On Sat, 29 Apr 2000, Tom Snell wrote:

Welcome back Tom. Good to hear how the other distros stack up. Helps users get a better idea of what they rely want in a distro. Cant have it all in the end , so like evrything esle its a comprimese on what you must have and what your willing to give up. what I realy like is the choice , there so meny. Been with suse sice 5.3 and have tossed 6.4 on a machien about a week ago. Plan on trying corel and Corel Office deluxe for one spoeciic workstation. Will be interesting to see how it compares to suse. Funny this is the first time efver I have even thought of trying a diffrent distro just to check it out. ThaTS HOW MUCH i LIKE SUSE.
