while there you may want to get the rpm and install it it wiill integrate into susehelp center
Thanks but still no luck. It says Install the package, enable inetd to run it,. . . I have the following line in etc/inetd.conf ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd vsftpd and I have rebooted. What I don't understand is the 'enable inetd to run it. How do I get inetd to run it plese? Steve. -------------------------------------------------------
Hi When You have this line in inetd.conf ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd vsftpd And You reboot (or do "rcinetd restar" as root), this change comes into effect. If You have enable the inetd for that runlevel, it is waiting for connections. Actually inetd daemon sees the connection request, looks for what port is that request made (have a look at /etc/services), then looks if there is a server configure in inetd.conf to serve that request (service-name from /etc/services). If so, it start it... In this case with command "/usr/sbin/tcpd vsftpd". Jaska. On Tuesday 01 October 2002 20:35, steve wrote:

Hi. Using gftp to connect I get: 220 ready, dude (vsFTPd 1.0.1: beat me, break me) USER ftpsecure 331 Please specify the password. PASS xxxx 230 Login successful. Have fun. TYPE I 200 Binary it is, then. PWD 257 "/home/ftpsecure" PASV 227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,2,35,134) Cannot create a data connection: No route to host I've also tried turning off PASV. It looks as if I'm logged in. I think it's something to do with groups. How do I correct the 'No route to host' bit? Thanks, steve.
I'm trying to get my xconsole back on the KDE desktop. My /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup contains the lines == # # Only for display :0 we have to set up the xconsole to be # sure that the system messages are visible. # case "$DISPLAY" in :0|:0.0) ;; *) exit 0 ;; esac # # The geometry of xconsole is set in the Xresource file. # ( exec setsid $xconsole -notify -nostdin -verbose -exitOnFail ) & echo $! > /var/run/xconsole.pid exit 0 == These should start xconsole. In fact it flashes very briefly on the screen sometimes just before KDE starts. If I run a script with these line in after starting KDE I get an xconsole as desired. Suggestions please. I like my xconsole :-) JDL

JDL =======================
JDL, As I just recently had this problem also, I hope my fix works for you also. The lines you show were in my file also and I got the brief flash of the xconsole when trying to activate it. Did you also notice in the file if you have this section too? # # Do not start xconsole for kdm # /sbin/checkproc -p /var/run/kdm.pid /opt/kde3/bin/kdm && exit 0 ------------------- This of course, stops the xconsole from running and should be commented out. I think mine happened after updating the XFree86 files. I missed the xconsole also, but from some of the more experienced users, system messages are better read with the tail -f command in a terminal. An example might be tail -f /var/log messages and then drop the terminal window on another desktop, out of your way, but easy to check. I have configured apache to server vitual hosts from the following location: /home/httpd/public_access/ V1/ V2/ etc. All virtual accounts exist in a user directory call httpd and are served from the public_html directory as ipbased virtual hosts. I would like to use vsftp as the users want ftp access (sftp is too difficult). Is there a way to configure either via the filesystem (uid, gid) and or vsftp to allow users only access to their individual accounts V1, V2, V3..an no where else. TIA /ch
