[opensuse] NVidia Driver for Geforce FX5500
HI I've got this board running a driver version 173.14.15 (not available on the nvidia site - latest there is 173.14.12). This driver is completely pants for KDE4, it is slow as molasses going uphill in the snow and artifacts all over the place (its finewith KDE3.5) - does anyone know if this will ever be upgraded to work with KDE4? I've tried all the other beta versions 177.x, 180.x and they all exit the install script saying that this card is not known about and wont be installed. Do ihave to upgrade my card to work with KDE4? If so, any recommendations? I'm not a gamer so i don't need any monster card. It can be ATI or NVidia but it needs to to have some life in it and not be deprecated as my current one seems to be. thanks Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Registered Linux User 484485 (http://counter.li.org/) I'm not because the ones i downloaded from Nvidia would not install. The 173.14.15 version i am actually running came from the Nvidia repository via Yast as inserted by the 1-Click. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Recommendation for today would be to *RUN*, don't walk, *RUN* to www.gearxs.com today and grab the BFG nvidia 8600GT w/1G of Ram for $68 US. Hell, if I didn't already have a spare + another radeon 1650, I'd buy a couple just to have. The 8600GT is a great card, on par with the 8800GT, great frame rates, fast as hell, and BFG has a LifeTime Warranty and they Really do send you a new card if yours goes bad............ I have 2 8600GTs and an 8800GT and I have been more than pleased with each one. The performance difference between the 8600 and 8800 is negligible. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Thanks, I'll have to check out the stores in the UK for that board. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ian, I'm running the same card with the 173.14.12 drivers and it works fine with KDE4. For ages when running KDE3 + compiz I had to stick to the 100.14.19 drivers because anything after that ran like garbage with 14-20% CPU usage for both X and Compiz. After upgrading to KDE4 the 173.14.12 drivers have been fine. I had installed them both from the nvidia site (via the nvidia installer) and via the nvidia repository, but I currently have them installed from the nvidia site because I compiled my own kernel and found it easier that way. To install from the nvidia installer: 1. You must have the kernel sources installed (and prep'd) for your running kernel - see David Rankin's tips in a recent thread re building kernel modules. 2. I usually build with --force-tls=new - that was necessary when I was running FC4/5 because they had 2 versions of glibc installed and if you didn't specify that switch it would default to the older version, resulting in apps like Google Earth insisting that there was no opengl support. I'm not sure that it is still needed but I do it anyway. 3. If you use the nvidia installer you will have to rebuild the kernel module each time you upgrade your kernel (doesn't happen too often now) using the -K switch when invoking the installer (or that might be -k - I always get that one mixed up...) Hope this helps. Rodney. -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== PS - I concur with David's advice re getting the 8600GT - I just wish they were as cheap here so I could afford one, but with the current exchange rate and local prices, no hope at the moment.
