Hi, I just dled the huge 70MB tar.gz file for OpenOffice 6.0 (in office, Windoze NT), burned it to a CD and tried to install here at home. I unpack this file, as it was told, I get an 'install' directory. And in this install directory, I have 297 new archives named f_00001 to f_00297 (or similar) and three normal files. One of them is 'setup'. Ok, I run setup, and it complains about the file 'setup.ins' which is not present. I agree, it actually isn't there :-(( Well, what's really puzzling me, if this file is in one of these 297 archives, I don't think they intentionally expect me to unpack all these 297 archives before installing, and so I think something might be wrong here ?!?!? Anyone got an idea? Or is the dled file corrupted and should I do a new 'clean' download on Linux? Cheers ... I just downloaded and installed OpenOffice.org638C without as much as a hic-up! No errors at all! All of the applications run smoothly so far. This is the package i downloaded: install638C_linux_intel.tar.gz from here: http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/build_638c/build638c.html Cheers, Helgi Örn -- Frige Karolina Johnsson -- Skriv under Petitionen -------------------http://www.release.nu/------------------- Release Karolina Johnsson ------ Sign the Petition

All right, after a new dl, it worked to install it. As far as I can see, it was only the setup which should have been renamed to setup.ins (?!?!) I installed it to /opt/openoffice, to make sure that every user can run it. This works as well, but you cannot save settings, since OO tries to do this in the opt directory - neither does a user have write access to this directory nor does it make sense. Please don't tell me that the only way to make it work is installing it in every single home directory consuming 240 MB each. That's the way I had it with StarOffice, and I would rather leave this way [if this is possible :-) ] Btw, I already tried to install OO to /home/wolfi/openoffice, and the installer told me that OO is already installed in /opt/openoffice, so I think there should be a way to save individual settings in §HOME and the program files in /opt. At least I hope so :-) Cheers ... Wolfi ================================== mailto:wolfi_z@yahoo.com _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well, StarOffice has install options for standalone and net installation. The net installation is what you want! :-) So, maybe you can also choose between standalone or net as well as with OpenOffice. I don't know it by sure because I never installed OpenOffice but StarOffice. Best regards, Ming-Che -- ICQ#: 126097979

I did the install of OpenOffice638 recently and it works well as net installation. Just install it with "setup /net" as root under /opt (for example) and then install for each user simply with "/opt/openoffice/setup" (or wherever you installed it).
Best regards,

OO does not give the choice. I have installed version 638c on SuSE 7.2. Installation went apparently faultless. Problem though: how to start OO. "soffice" instruction is unknown. If your not using KDE then edit your menu so it executes this file...or take StarOffice 5.2 out of your path and put this in it. Simple :) Since this is a beta and not to worked out as far as installation..I wouldn't expect an automatic icon to appear :) Cheers, -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal" -AE

Hi guys, In the meantime I reinstalled OO on my box with the /net option. If I am now starting it as user, I get a box saying: ------------------------------------------------------------ OpenOffice.org 638 The program cannot start. The configuration file 'sregistryrc' is missing. Start setup application to repair installation? YES NO ------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, click yes, setup screen appears, it says installation has been repaired and exits. Next attempt to start OO, same procedure. My suspicion is, I have to copy some config files to my home directory, but ... I don't know which ones. Has anybody had that problem? Otherwise I would start my trials with a search for this file in /opt/openoffice and copy this to my $HOME/openoffice which I then would create, and see what happens next .... Cheers ...
