hardware(?)-problem with new mini pc
Hi, I just bought a new intel-I7-mini pc (brand of a Spanish shop pccomoponentes, which doesn't exist in internet, so I don't know about the psysical details). I installed OpenSuse 15.5 which went flawless, but later, during the first update, it suddenly shut down and rebooted. This repeated several times, but the sudden shutdown/reboot occurs after different times in different situations. Because my first thought was that it's a memory problem I booted with memtest86 and let it run for approx. 5 hours (1 full pass plus some more) with no error reported. In one occasion while running OS I got the following system messages: Message from syslogd@localhost at Jun 10 08:41:52 ... kernel:[ 0.281458] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 0 ADDR 7fad98dd9bb7 MISC 7fad98dd9bb7 Message from syslogd@localhost at Jun 10 08:41:52 ... kernel:[ 0.281462] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:806ec TIME 1686379255 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode ec Message from syslogd@localhost at Jun 10 08:41:52 ... kernel:[ 0.284382] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 1: Machine Check: 0 Bank 3: be00000000800400 Message from syslogd@localhost at Jun 10 08:41:52 ... kernel:[ 0.284389] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 0 ADDR 7fad98dd9bb7 MISC 7fad98dd9bb7 Message from syslogd@localhost at Jun 10 08:41:52 ... kernel:[ 0.284393] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:806ec TIME 1686379255 SOCKET 0 APIC 2 microcode ec Message from syslogd@localhost at Jun 10 08:41:52 ... kernel:[ 0.281453] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 4: be00000000800400 that explain to: Hardware event. Hi Daniel, This /could/ be a hardware problem /or/ a kernel bug, but it's a new 'mini' so you'd likely need some surgeon's tools and a steady hand to effect any repairs deeper than removing and replacing things at the board / device level -- if even that is possible. I think a more efficient test would involve exchanging the suspected 'defective' new unit with the seller so you can try to reproduce the problem with the replacement. I'm basing this approach on the following:
Machine check not valid Corrected error CPUID Vendor Intel Family 6 Model 142 Step 12 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode ec Hardware event. This is not a software error. CPU 1 BANK 3 Processor context corrupt MCA: Internal Timer error
In the 'old days' with larger components, swapping out the CPU and memory, etc, would be easy. But this unit is new and under warranty (I presume) and swapping out components is likely more difficult, and, I suspect "Processor context corrupt" and "Internal Timer error" complaints are likely hardware. regards, Carl

Thank you Carl, yes, it's new and there is warranty. I'll try to send it back Monday. I just liked to have some feedback (like yours) so I can stand hard and say: it IS the hardware! You know: all so-called customer services always say: oh, when there is not Windows then it is the operating system, not the hardware... I personally think the beeps at switching on already show that there is a hardware problem, because to my knowledge in the moment that those beeps occur the computer doesn't know what system it will find later... But I might be wrong, that's why I am asking here :-) have a nice weekend! -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

My computer beeps before loading grub, it means that the self testing finished. My miniPC takes a long time to activate the video on HDMI, I don't see all the starting displays. I would try TW, just for testing it is a kernel support issue. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.4 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Yes, it's very low, you have to turn the speakers higher :-) And yes, some computers beep once shortly after testing and then boot. But this then is one short beep, like the last one that occurs a second after the strange longer beep(s) in second 8... I think this beep(s) in second 8 are "error-beeps", but not sure, of course... -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

What I am saying is to make sure that it is indeed a motherboard for a 10th generation Intel CPU.
As long as this can be done without altering the product, which may be returned. I know the shop, I buy most of my stuff there. But for me it is almost local, it is one hour trip. It has a technical service, so they can check if the machine is Ok (they seem to be sympathetic to Linux, I have returned stuff that failed on Linux). The other option is to return even if the machine verifies and get another brand. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.4 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Daniel Bauer composed on 2023-06-10 13:52 (UTC+0200):
I just bought a new intel-I7-mini pc (brand of a Spanish shop pccomoponentes, which doesn't exist in internet, so I don't know about the psysical details).
i7-10510U was launched nearly 4 years ago, so is clearly old enough for mature Gnu/Linux support.
5 hours (1 full pass plus some more) with no error reported. ... This failure description suggests to me to do what follows expediently with expectation it needs to be returned for exchange or refund due to hardware defect: 1-check if a BIOS update is available 2-make sure applicable firmware is installed 3-If it has only one RAM stick installed, try it in a different slot, and install a matching second. If 2 or more, swap them around. 4-run memtest at least 4 full passes. 1 only is inconclusive. 5-check whether grub linu line addition nomce had any effect. 6-Check with live media of some other distro, e.g. TW. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. The beep is here: https://www.daniel-bauer.com/div/bib.mp4 (begins a 8 seconds, low sound from phone recording, but clear; pushig the power button 8 seconds nothing happens, then come(s) the beep(s), after a second another short beep and then it boots).
My questions: - Can anyone decrypt those mce messages?
I'll offer a guess - I see three errors, one corrected, two uncorrected, although they are reported in different "banks". I have to think that is a memory problem. The beeping you are hearing is almost certainly the BIOS' way of communicating that.
- Is is clear that it is a hardware error or could it be a software thing?
With Machine Checks, it is a hardware issue. I guess I am too late and you have already returned the device, but I would have tried another memory stick or another configuration. Much like what Felix suggested too. Also, your mini PC is most likely made by Xuzhou Venoen, the same one is available under different names - Fanpeec, Weidian etc. Looking at some of the other names, they say max 16Gb memory per slot. It is really poor show that there is no manual with your PC. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (26.6°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes (2016 - present) We're hiring - https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Heroes

They sent me a new one. It also beeps, but a bit different :-) I cannot "decode" the beeps as they are fast. I tried to look at it in audacity (installed it for that) but the line is so flat that I also couldn't find out more... So I have no idea about those beeps.

Yes, they already changed it for a new one. Apart of the beeps it run from beginning (I had the system already installed before on the SSD that I didn't send for exchange). I let it run (without doing nothing) for approx. 3 hours and it didn't reboot. But I will have to make tests with heavy load, because the errors occurred during system update when the computer had a lot to do applying changes. I'll try with some video rendering. To change Memory I'd need other memory bars, which I would have to buy...
Also, your mini PC is most likely made by Xuzhou Venoen, the same one is available under different names - Fanpeec, Weidian etc. Looking at some of the other names, they say max 16Gb memory per slot.
Yes, I was aware that it is something cheap (as, relatively, is the price), put together with what's available in low-price. This new one, for example, has another fan than the last one. On the page of the seller they say 32Gb per slot, but a maximum of 32Gb in total. I have put one 32Gb bar, tried both slots (in the failed machine) with no difference. Hardware Info shows 32Gb.
It is really poor show that there is no manual with your PC.
Yes, not even a list of the used parts, it's a bit disappointing. -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

Since there is no RES,
Sorry, I had no time to play with that new computer these days. Above is the answer, but I fear it doesn't say a lot... I can' find anything meaningful for "Alurin"...
I checked and found that the CPU socket of mini PC for Intel CPU is
LGA 1700 (Socket V)
This socket is compatible with 12th generation Intel CPUs (BIOS update is required for 13th generation CPUb).
However, Daniel reports a 10th generation CPU on his PC, which is hard to believe.
It's not surprising that it makes unknown beeping noises.
I don't know what socket there is actually, I can't find that information. The sellers page more or less just says Familia Procesador: Intel® Core™ de 10ª Generación Modelo Procesador: Procesador Intel® Core™ I7-10510U Modelo de adaptador gráfico incorporado: Intel® UHD Graphics and that it looks nice and is very good :-)
Regards.

Also tried Firefox 102.11.0esr in Leap 15.5, no problem Something very strange happened when loading "https://alurintech.com/" in 15.5: it said that an update to Firefox started in the background. You'll need to restart firefox to finish the update. And a button appears which seems real enough, except that this is impossible in Leap. The "about" box knows nothing about an update. If I open google.es I get that restart required. The package kit applet is in "refresh cache = never" settings. It's a hardware thing, but as I began the thread, here the latest confusing info: - the mini PC was replaced with a new one of same brand/type, still beeps (different) when switching on (https://www.daniel-bauer.com/div/bip2.mp4 from second 3) it's an American Megatrends Bios - I replaced the single bar 32GB memory with 2 new bars of 16GB - no change :-( - I installed cpu-x, but that doesn't give more information about the motherboard, it's original name seems to have been replaced by "Alurin" Up to now the system works with no errors, but I didn't do a lot. First installed by error OS 15.3, then 15.5 from scratch, both installs without problems. A bit internet, installing apache etc. Tomorrow I'll try to put it a bit on stress rendering a video and see what happens. So what remains are those beeps at switching on that don't seem normal to me. I don't think it is the memory because as well the 32GB bar as the two 16GB bars are new, of different brands, and I can't imagine that they have the same error. I am not sure if I should just live with it and think, ok I have a PC that likes to beep at startup. Or if I should give it back and buy another brand. Or if there are some meaningful tests that tell me if there is an error or not. Just for information: Yes, I think (hope) the new PC is working as should, despite of the beep... I let if resize a video with ffmpeg -i aFishCalledWanda.avi -vf scale=1080:-1 -threads 0 -preset veryslow -crf 18 -movflags +faststart wanda.mp4 which should used it at the max. It run perfectly. To be even more mean with it, and although gkrellm showed nearly 100% usage of all cores I used Yast to install a large application plus surfed the internet with firefox, all at the same time. The processors got hot (98 - 100°C), but it worked fine. Then I encrypted a new external 8TB disk and am installing ext4 file system on a single 8TB partition with mkfs.ext4 -c L, which runs since 14:23h and is at 97.5% right now with the processors at 54°C. For my knowledge this is quite a heavy stress test and it passed. So I hope the case is solved. Thanks everybody for the input!
