I asked a vendor about booting from a pcie Z-170 adapter using a Plextor M.2 and they replied thusly: "I just installed OpenSUSE Leap on a Z-170 using a Plextor M.2 and ran into zero issues installing in Legacy mode (non UEFI). The only issue that I did run into is that the kernel does not recognize the 1219-V Intel LAN controller coming standard on Skylake. The installer has the driver but doesn't know it can use it. I installed the OS, used WiFi to update the kernel then everything worked as it should. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed has a new enough kernel that the 1219-V is recognized native."
