I have a HP Pavilion a1520n computer: Asus A8N-LA (Nagami2) motherboard; dual-core Athlon 64 X2 3800+; 250 GB SATA disk (plus an added 200 GB disk for Linux). SuSE 10.1 was installed, without significant problems. There were some inconvenient features after installation (e.g., no ethernet connection after reboot from WinXP, unless the power cord is pulled off for a bit), but it basically works fine. I knew that some of the problems were fixed up in 10.2, and was eager to install it. I downloaded the DVD x86_64 iso (also the CD1 iso), and burned disks. All md5sums are OK. About a dozen lines or so after starting the install, I encountered the line "Starting udev ..." and the installation hung. (Reported as bug 229217 and unresolved. The status is 'Needinfo', but there is no way to get a log file.) This occurs with both the DVD and CD1. I had read that disabling ACPI was a workaround. Yes, but: during the installation menu/setup screens, the installer searches for all hardware, but does NOT find any hard disks. I had seen messages about problems with the sata-promise driver, but that is not relevant. The driver turns out to be sata-nv (GeForce 6150LE/nForce 430/MCP51). I had read that setting 'maxcpus=0' might be a workaround. OK. I was able to install SuSE 10.2. I'm still working of configuring it the way I want. (It would be much easier if the import/export feature of SuSE 10.0 was still available in the Software Manager. There is a long-standing 'critical' bug report, with no progress.) My problem is that I now appear to have only 1 cpu available. xosview shows only one, and the hardward list has only 1 entry, and 'top' identifies only 1 cpu. If the 'maxcpus=0' boot option is removed, the computer will not boot. It appears to me that the SMP features of the kernel are all set in the active configuration list.
