We will be happy to help but first we will need a little more information. Is your server on a LAN or are you wanting to connect to a dialup ISP? If you are going to share out space on the Linux system use Samba; included in the distribution in 'n' section. Very simple to setup. Regards, Jon On Thu, 30 Mar 2000, Fakultas Teknik wrote:

Okay then, why doesn't SuSE make a decent Samba-setup tool/script? I think this is not hard for someone who knows samba, and I'm sure it will help a lot of newbies and sysadmins to setup a Samba-server. For instance, when I install Samba, I just want to share a directory. Not to browse the howto's -again- and read and read. I want to tell my box what its name is, its workgroup, what directory it should share and what the sharename should be. In the 'advanced' (well, maybe not that advaned), I want to be able to specify the rights, but I'd say: RO for the default sharing permissions, permissions on share-level. Would this be an idea for the next release? There is a product called webmin that has a very easy tool for setting up Samba (mounts and printers). You can also access it over the web or your intranet. It is a very helpful tool, especially for sys admins, and even for newbies trying to get there system up and going. Check it out: http://www.webmin.com/webmin Rogier Maas wrote:

Yes I know. I've been using Webmin for about a year and a half now, and I like it. But still: each time I have to figure out how exactly to configure all the parameters. The first time, it broadcasts itself to the workgroup but has no shares, the second time it has shares but doesn't broadcast, etc. I now knoe how to configure Samba, but many (MANY) people don't. Just count the messages about Samba-problems and you'll agree. Rogier Steve Jackson wrote:

All you need to do is read the two samba docs and edit the sample file. I did this a rank newwbie on 5.3 with only two weeks into linux. Yes it took some reading , and a few post to the list. That was before swat was even out. Once you learn to edit the file , I havent had the need to find another way do di it. I do have a couple of samba books, Samba in 24 hrs and Samba black book , a hard core samba book that gets into the nity grity including working on the windows side of it. The windows side is usealy left out , more of a learn it on the job type thing. The only real hang up I had was with the disapearing network nieborhood bug/issue , and finaly some one here figured out that you had to remove the dimmie network device , and then every thing was back working. I ended up rolling back the server till the fix came out. Now its running 6.3 , and I just use the older file and tweak it. At 01:30 AM 3/30/2000 +0200, Rogier Maas wrote: that then it

Rogier, [megaquote cut] ome notes on your message, if you don't mind. First of all, please edit your quotes in the future to include only the relevant parts, not the whole thread. It's a waste of bandwith and peoples time to do otherwise. Please remember that some of those on the list have to pay rather dearly for accessing the internet and any megaquote such as yours wastes their money. It's also good style to place your comments *after* the quote, not before. And please also refrain from unnecessary attachments such as your vcard. They're commonly frowned upon, specially as they're a) only readable by persons using Netscape and b) rather useless in a mailing list such as this. Yes it is not known by newbies , The plian text / encyption pronlem is well known and documented at samba.org. The dummie device intererance seems to be suse specific. Yes there should be a samba.suse.readme file that has this info in it. But how meny newbies will actualy read it. Most just install the package , grumble when it doesent work , and then the more motivated will post. I realy dont see this changing much , and the list is an appropriate place for this to be solved. It may anoy some ot the older folks who have been on the list for a while. But its part of the game so to speak. So we should chime in with the fix. If othethers hadent chimed in with our problems , we would all be looking for another os. Its part of the linux experiance , especialy the willingness to get down and dirty and help others with there problems. Linux is not M$ , and it does get ugly at times. But throwing a gui will not fix it. There are times when you realy want to and need to edit a file by hand. There are only so meny options to put in a gui with check boxes and radio buttons. Otherwise you can realy get some convaluted stuff. So text files are here to stay. Some can start real basic , and then get more comlicated as the user gets mor experiance. Samba is a good example. I am not knoledgable about Scripts and have done a little programing , so I realy can not comment if that is a solution. I think there are several network admins here that can offer some thoughts and solutions to this problem At 12:44 AM 3/31/2000 +0200, Rogier Maas wrote: the

Now that's an understatement if ever I saw one ;-) My experience
shows
at least for a newbie, it's not that simple to set up. But it ain't that hard either. One just has to read the available documentation and

(6.5 that is)

Fakultas, I have a Linux/NT network here at home. I use mostly TCP/IP and a little bit of SaMBa. http://www.samba.org/ I have set up SaMBa to run as a server, but since I don't have a lot of use for that, I have not kept up with that configuraton. If you give us more information about what you are attempting, the folks on the list will be more able to help you. Do you have NICs set up in both systems? Do they both work? Do you know how to set up a TCP/IP network? ... ? Steve Fakultas Teknik wrote:
