Why does SUSE 8.0 forgets everything ?
I have SUSE 8.0 (installed from DVD) on an Athlon 1600 xp, 256 MB RAM, Matrox G550. My problem is that SUSE seems to forget some configuration topics when I logout then login again, and this does not happen always, examples: 1) As root, (KDE) I change the 4 desktop wallpapers. If I logout, then login, the system reverts to the default wallpapers. This does NOT happen when I work as simple user (my changes remain effective) 2) I have installed with YAST2 my Epson 1660 Scanner. It works fine. I have changed the required parameters to make it work for normal users. It works. Then, as usual not always, but SOMETIMES, it says that it cannot find any SANE devices. I have to login as root and re-install the Scanner. Then it works again. Again SOMETIMES it works as root, then I logout and login as normal user, and the Scanner "disappears". I do not want to write more now, but there are some other configuration topics which seem to be "forgotten" between a logout and the next login. Any idea ? Thanx, Riccardo, Italy.

I don't know the answer, but I have seen this behaviour as well. I think it has to do with the fact that root is not a normal user (different home, different configuration). My solution is not to use the root account for Login to KDE at all. There is almost nothing that cannot be done from any other account as well (using su). In some rare cases I use the root account from a terminal window. I never had any of this anoying problems anymore since I started working this way. Peter

This is a security issue. They don't want you to forget that you work as root. Actually, they probably don't want you to work as root any longer than absolutely necessary.

FAQ. To stop root losing kde settings in 8.0 do, as root, touch /root/.skel/kdebase3 -- Pam R: Don't put off until tomorrow what you can leave to the day after. Linux StepbyStep: http://www.linux-sxs.org/stepbystep.html

You can see this by doing this... rpm -qa | grep kde > kdepkgs The open kdepkgs in your favorite text editor to see what pkgs begin with kde are installed. If you do the 'touch /root/.skel/kdebase3' then this should fix your issue. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I tell you what you should see.
