Can you see the CD-RW in XCDroast? When you get the 'Unknown device' message it is often a mount error. If you have symlinked like 'ln -sf /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrecorder' you might have to mount your cdrecorder as 'mount /dev/sr0 /cdrecorder'. If that does not work, post your '/etc/fstab', and the output of 'ls -l /dev |grep cdr*'here, and I suppose we could help you.
