[opensuse] ctrl-alt f1 ... ctr alt f6 do not work after fresh 13.1 install (KDE)
Subject says it all. OS Linux 3.11.10-21 desktop openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (i586) KDE version: 4.11.5 /dev/Stty0 to /dev/Stty7 duly show up in Kinfocenter I chose "Automatic configuration" during installation (big mistake) but was able to recover pretty well. This issue is a bit of a showstopper though, because I use this feature fairly often. Did anyone have this issue and/or does anyone know where I should start looking? Regards,
It definitely is a KDE issue. In the login screen ctl alt f1 ... ctr alt f7 work as expected. Go figure. -- Jos van Kan registered Linux user #152704 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Just ideas: 1-if not using en_US, switch KB type to en_US to see if it has any effect 2-if you have a spare keyboard, plug it into another port, and/or try another port with the keyboard you normally use 3-if you haven't already, do updates with Zypper or YaST 4-if you haven't already, reboot 5-create another user, log into it to see if problem exists there too 6-share your /var/log/Xorg.0.log if you need further help -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Looking at Xorg.0.log won't tell you anything, as you already know it's about your own personal KDE settings. There could be something in .xsession-errors. ~/.kde4/share/config/ here has three files containing string "keyb". You might try logging out, deleting those three files, and finding the problem gone on next login, with minimal reconfiguration to do. If that doesn't work, log out again and delete the content from /var/tmp/kde-cache-<username>, /tmp/ksocket-<username> and /tmp/kde-<username>. Depending on how complicated your personal settings are and how much work you're willing to do to rebuild almost from scratch as if new KDE user, you might just try deleting everything from ~/.kde4/share/config/. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Depending on how complicated your personal settings are and how much work you're willing to do to rebuild almost from scratch as if new KDE user, you might just try deleting everything from ~/.kde4/share/config/. It turned out to be the file kxkbrc in .kde4/share/config that somehow blocked

I found this out by starting from a virgin .kde4, ls -R' ed the contents of share/config into a text file, do an rsync of the contents of share/config of the offending .kde4 and ls -R'ed that too into a text file. Then I diff'ed the two files to see what could be removed. Then I did essentially a binary search, removing half of the possible cultprits in each iteration. :) The content of kxkbrc looks harmless enough, but removing it from the config directory restored the functionality of ctr alt fn. Whew. :) Thanks, especially to Felix for his support. -- Jos van Kan registered Linux user #152704 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
