Uh oh....preparing for massive mailinglist load.
I know this subject has been duscussed before and I know the normal answer to it, and I have to say I agree. A company has to be allowed to earn money. But I do have a suggestion to solve another problem. I've bought all suse versions 6.1 - 7.3, and on all occasions I've had the same problem: delivery. Usually I have to read about other's installations on this list for over a month before my own copy arrives. So here's my suggestion: an online download subscription service. I pay my money to suse just as I would if I bought the boxed set, only what I'm paying for is bandwidth for an online download. SuSE gets their money, I get my software in a reasonable time, the load on the already stretched SuSE logistics is lessened, everybody is happy. If it helps any, I think RedHat has a service pretty similar to this :) What do you people think about it? //Anders
Not a bad idea, sorry bout the iso question, but I keep buying Suse pro packages everytime there is a new release since 6.4. An update service with just the software would better. Anders Johansson wrote:

There is the upgrade version, which contains the CDs and support but no or minimal manuals. The price in the US was $49, not sure how much in Europe. -- -ckm

Yeah, well, that upgrade version for 7.3 was available about 4 months after release where I am. Since SuSE germany stopped shipping directly, service through retailers has been *horrible*, at least here. An option to purchase "CDs" via the net would be highly appreciated. //Anders

Sorry it doesn't help Anders much, but for the record suse.co.uk shipped me the excellent update package for 7.3 overnight following my order, and within hours of the distribution being released. It was about £35.00, so around the same as Christopher said. Nice one UK office. Best Fergus

Yeah, well, it was just a thought, and since the responce hasn't been I guess it wasn't as popular an idea as I thought it would be. Oh well, I can live with delays. //Anders

Well... the record for the 7.2 release in the Netherlands - the first one I bought from a local vendor instead of direct from the SuSE site - was awful. It took several weeks for it to arrive in the Netherlands. I was prepared for this again with the release of 7.3, but was pleasantly surprised that it was available here very soon after the release date. I was interested in getting the update as soon as possible in the past because I was having so much trouble configuring everything, and each update fixed many of the things I was fighting with. Since 7.2 I have had a relatively trouble free Linux life - well OK, I have problems with the install, but most are my own fault... Now when 8.0 arrives, I will not be waiting at the door of my local computer shop, waiting for the shipment from Germany. If it is a week or two later, I can live with that... then again, maybe I'll win the new version since I entered the contest on the German SuSE site on the weekend. ;-) C.
Hi there, a question for PPP users : does any body knows what this means : linux pppd[798]: Couldn't increase MRU to 1500 it appears from time to time in my console log, but it does not seem to interfere with anything until... i don't know.

I think it's fine, if you eventually get the CD's. Otherwise, how do you do a reinstall if the machine crashes? Also, you probably need to be able to store the files on a Windows system, so you need to make the filenames compatible, somehow. Windows gets itchy when you have more than one "dot" in the filename. --doug

Hey Christopher, maybe you should add this to the message footer: "Do not ask about ISO images of the latest SuSE!" 'Course if people can't read the footers to see how to unsubscribe, they prolly won't read that footer either. ;^) Cheers, Ken -- Ken Hughes <kenh@ast-inc.com> o _ _ _ Automated Systems of Tacoma __o __o /\_ _ \\o (_)\__/o (_) Information Technology `\<, _`\<, _>(_) (_)/<_ \_| \ _|/' \/ 253.475.0200 (_)/(_) (_)/(_) (_) (_) (_) (_)' _\o_
Please everyone, lets not start the debate which we just had a few weeks back. To answer your question, there is none. You can download the live evaluation copy at best. Or in the alternative, perform an install via ftp. Jim 02/26/02 05:16:43 PM, Clinton Frans Aarts <cfaarts@xs4all.nl> wrote:

OK, now we can all respond with "Read the FAQ please": Q12. Where can I get i386 ISOs of SuSE Linux? Q12. Here is SuSE's official statement about no-cost ISO images: http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/lmuelle_suselinux_internet.html This page also explains how to do an installation from ftp.suse.com or, preferably, one of it's mirrors. Before starting another "SuSE should/shouldn't provide ISO like everyone else" thread please read through the past threads in the archives; they are very tiresome and most likely a waste of time since the people who make these sorts of decisions don't read SLE. A more productive way to express your opinion on the matter is to email feedback@suse.de. -- -ckm
