Problem with wireless card
I have a wireless card (PCMCIA) Dlink G630 (B1), running in SuSE 9.3. The card is recognizied, but I cannot connect to internet. The authentication metod is WEP (128 bits). I configure whith YOU and i try to connect whith Kinternet. I have not had good results, apparently appears as associate but it does not obtain from router (DHCP) the IP. Also them comment that previously with other router with wep of 64 bits I could make work it. I clarify this last one by the compatibility of the wireless card. to continuation the configuration files: notebook_linux:/etc/sysconfig/network # cat ifcfg-wlan-bus-pci-0000\:03\:00.0 MTU='' NAME='D-Link ACX 111 54Mbps Wireless Interface' REMOTE_IPADDR='' STARTMODE='auto' UNIQUE='svHJ.oRQZSF2LIrD' USERCONTROL='yes' WIRELESS_AUTH_MODE='open' WIRELESS_KEY_1='F99F43EC7040705036161631B1' WIRELESS_KEY_2='712B590BD70D32007043618B32' WIRELESS_KEY_3='BD2190CB0EB08757B5CF1C0BE4' WIRELESS_NICK='' WIRELESS_POWER='no' WIRELESS_WPA_PSK='' _nm_name='bus-pci-0000:03:00.0' WIRELESS_ESSID='MiRed' WIRELESS_KEY_0='642BAC0F44F357954C0FB54DBC' BOOTPROTO='dhcp' WIRELESS_NWID='' WIRELESS_KEY='' WIRELESS_DEFAULT_KEY='0' WIRELESS_KEY_LENGTH='128' WIRELESS_AP='' WIRELESS_BITRATE='auto' WIRELESS_CHANNEL='' WIRELESS_MODE='Managed' WIRELESS_FREQUENCY='' ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the out for restart of the network: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- notebook_linux:~ # rcnetwork restart Shutting down network interfaces: eth0 device: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401 100Base-T (rev 01) eth0 configuration: eth-id-00:0d:56:35:31:9b done wlan0 device: Texas Instruments ACX 111 54Mbps Wireless Interface wlan0 configuration: wlan-bus-pci-0000:03:00.0 done Shutting down service network . . . . . . . . . . . . . done Hint: you may set mandatory devices in /etc/sysconfig/network/config Setting up network interfaces: lo lo IP address: 127.0.0.1/8 done eth0 device: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401 100Base-T (rev 01) eth0 configuration: eth-id-00:0d:56:35:31:9b eth0 IP address: 192.168.0.100/24 done wlan0 device: Texas Instruments ACX 111 54Mbps Wireless Interface wlan0 configuration: wlan-bus-pci-0000:03:00.0 wlan0 (DHCP) . . . . . no IP address yet... backgrounding. waiting Setting up service network . . . . . . . . . . . . . . done SuSEfirewall2: Warning: ip6tables does not support state matching. I have had the basic problem but with the g650 card and suse 10 rc1 I have found a solution however... Upon starting bring up a console then type ifconfig ath0 down ( in your case wlan0 instead of ath0) ifconfig ath0 up dhcpcd ath0 then it works fine hope this helps LeRoy H. Maxwell III

I don't have a wireless card, but this article on netapplet that comes with SuSE 9.3 seems to be well worth looking at. http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=05/09/13/1914255 Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Raul, I don't know if it is relevant, but I had problems with my laptop PC when I had both ethernet and wifi running together. I overcame this by arranging for these interfaces to be started manually only as and when required. This is in the advanced settings under YAST. Then it is necessary only to use the commands 'ifup eth0' and 'ifdown eth0', etc Ken Hough Raul H. Lapitzondo wrote:

Raul, 'ifup' and 'ifdown' work for me. I use DHCP via the router. I'm not an expert wrt wifi (or indeed wrt Linux) and have not set up WEP yet. My only access control is SSID. Have you tried disabling all access control? Can you then get IP via DHCP. Is the firewall getting in the way? On screen messages during setup of my wifi card often suggest that DHCP has not been successful, but after a few seconds LEDs on wifi card indicate an active link and 'ifconfig' confirms setup (named as 'ath0' in my case). My router is a NETGEAR DG834GT and wifi card a WG511T. I'm running SuSE v9.1 Ken Hough Raul H. Lapitzondo wrote:

So that proves that your router and wifi card work. That's good. It doesn't prove if your Linux setup is correct. Have you tried turning off all security on both the router and on your Linux setup? ie temporarily turn off firewalls, WEP, SSID etc. If this works then the basic Linux setup is OK, then build up from there. I have only got as far as setting up SSID (easy!) and the firewalls, but then I'm a bit lazy. Good luck Ken Hough

Hi Ken !.
In another partition of the disc I have installed XP, with which I can connect without problems obtaining the IP of the DHCP, I do not understand where it is the problem :(

Raul,
'ifup' and 'ifdown' work for me.
I'm running SuSE v9.1

Hi Ken, I already did it but it does not work :)

Raul,
I don't know if it is relevant, but I had problems with my laptop PC when I had both ethernet and wifi running together.
I overcame this by arranging for these interfaces to be started manually only as and when required. This is in the advanced settings under YAST.
Then it is necessary only to use the commands 'ifup eth0' and 'ifdown eth0', etc

Best Regards Raul Ray, Try going to a konsole, sux to root, or su, whichever, and then entering: export PREFER_WPA_SUPPLICANT=NO and then ifup your wireless.
