Hi there, I once posted a question about The Gimp and I got a lot of cool feedback. What I'd like to know more about is the kind of PC needed in order to do some photo editing. To be more specific; what kind of cpu does this require? Would an AMD K2 400 be suitable for the job? Thanks. -- Yatsen Ng yatsen.ng@brunel.nl Den Haag, The Netherlands It said "Needs Windows 95 or better". Well, I run Gimp on an old K6-233 with 64MB of RAM. Photo editing is more a question of RAM, depending on the size of your images. However, if you apply filters and other bells and whistles to your picture, a faster CPU won't hurt, too :) Anyway, your processor should be fine. Works on my 486/120. Yatsen Ng wrote:

Thanks for the tips. The machine I originally had in mind looks like this: Epox socket 7 motherboard AMD K2 400 CPU (boxed) Maxtor Diamond Max VL17, 13.0Gb, U-ATA66 Matrox Millennium G400 16Mb SH OEM Iiyama A702HT Vision Master Pro410,17",Diamondtron 1xDimm 128Mb SDram PC100, 100MHz I only mentioned the most important features. Anyway, I'm still not too sure about the CPU because I get a lot of different suggestions. Now I do know that lots of RAM is more important then a faster CPU when it comes to photo editing. Those of you who say that the AMD would do just fine make sense but so does John Pennington... -- Yatsen Ng yatsen.ng@brunel.nl Den Haag, The Netherlands It said "Needs Windows 95 or better". I'll clarify, then: If you were *buying* parts *specifically* to run The GIMP, I'd *personally* recommend a Celeron. However, since you seem to already have the components on hand (is this right?), your specs will be just fine. I'm merely saying that AMD K6's have wimpy FPU's compared to similarly-priced Intel Celerons. In short: What you have is just fine. If you want to know my opinion, I'd buy a Celeron. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Well, I guess I have to inject my 0.02 into this conversation. I have the following system and it never gets overwhelmed. I use Gimp, Sketch, EE and lots of other art related software..heck it even rocks with Blender... AMD K6-III 400 on a Soyo MB 256 megs of PC100 DIMMS (swap is 128 megs) Diamond Viper 770 32meg AGP card 20 Gig Western Digital and 15 Gig Maxtor (both UltraATA66 drives) 40X Acer CDROM AWE64 Gold ISA 3Com 3c590TX I have very little trouble getting this box to just kickass and if the file editing becomes too cumbersome ( which is rarely ) I move the file over my network to my Sun and use my Ultra 10 w/ a Creator3D .. but as I said I rarely get bad performance out of it .. and I help my wife out a lot because she is a web designer and works with pretty big files. I would go with as much ram and the fastest disk configuration you can afford. Thanks for letting me babble..laters, Jon Pennington wrote:

Hello there Jon, Actually it's a lady friend of mine who's interested in photo editing and she doesn't have a whole lot of cash to spend. No, she doesn't have a PC yet. I know the other components are up to the task and I was also thinking about a Celeron. I just wanted to know for sure if a non Intel CPU would also be up to the task. Yes, I know an Athlon would be an excellent choice but, you know, the budget... -- Yatsen Ng yatsen.ng@brunel.nl Den Haag, The Netherlands It said "Needs Windows 95 or better". maybe your "lady friend" should buy a second hand powermac 9*00 . + enough RAM as possible + a big second hand monitor. then she can photo edit on the MacOS and/or PPClinux and/or SusE :-D

My girlfriend uses my work laptop which is running SuSE 6.3 and is a P2 266 with 64 meg of ram.. It seems to handle most of the stuff she does.. But it can slow down on very large images.
