What software components do I need to learn about and configure in order to enable user X on machine A to access user X's files on machine Y via NFS? (Assume that the user numbers differ between A and B.) At one time I had this working with the library version of NFS and a program (don't remember its name) for mapping user and group identities, but that doesn't work with the kernel version of NFS. Either NIS (antique, easy to maintain, prone to inexplicable failuers) or LDAP (modern, perhaps steeper learnig curve, "the way of the future") would be a good choice, so you don't have that problem with differing UIDs. If you're looking for rpc.ugidd, this might interest you: dsauer@danny-pc:/usr/share/doc/packages/nfs-utils> grep -R ugidd . ./TODO: * uid/gid mapping, and rpc.ugidd support --Danny, wondering when it'll be done...

Yes, rpc.ugidd was what I was using with the lib-based rather than kernel-based version of NFS. It certainly would be nice if there were a kernel-based version of it in nfs-utils. Guess it's time for me to learn about LDAP. Any recommendations on the best docs to start with? Paul

Not offhand, but a google search would probably work. Since your SuSE box supports that scheme, though, there's probably some docs in the /usr/share/doc directory somewhere. I thought there was something in one of the books, too, which are available in PDF form (among others, again, IIRC) on the FTP site with the other packages. I'd offer suggestions, but I learned before the stuff was realy mature, and I'm pretty sure my way of doing things is obtuse, inefficient, and generally not the best way to do stuff now. :) My docs and utilities (yeah, I even had to write replacements for useradd/userdel/etc back in "the day") will show up on that google search if you really wanna do it the crummy way. --Danny
