[opensuse] openSuSE11.1 and JVM, will not run applets
Hi list, - I just new installed my openSuSE11.1 machine in order to get a messed up KDE desktop fixed. This worked reasonably well. I wass dumb enough to believe that i could just get JVM working again - in Firefox. I couldn't. In /usr/lib/jvm/ I have a pile of javas: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 10 aug 23:06 jre-1.6.0-sun -> java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0/jre lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 10 aug 21:33 jre-gcj -> /etc/alternatives/jre_gcj lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 10 aug 21:33 jre -> /etc/alternatives/jre lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 10 aug 21:33 jre-1.6.0 -> /etc/alternatives/jre_1.6.0 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 10 aug 21:33 java-1.5.0-gcj-4.3-1.5.0.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 10 aug 21:33 jre-1.5.0 -> /etc/alternatives/jre_1.5.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 10 aug 23:07 jre-sun -> /etc/alternatives/jre_sun drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 10 aug 21:32 java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.2_b11 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 10 aug 23:06 java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 10 aug 21:33 jre-openjdk -> /etc/alternatives/jre_openjdk drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 10 aug 22:08 java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 10 aug 22:08 jre-1.6.0-openjdk -> java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0/jre lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 10 aug 21:33 jre-1.5.0-gcj -> java-1.5.0-gcj-4.3-1.5.0.0/jre I actually downloaded some SUN java jre-6u15-linux-i586.rpm and installed it with "rpm -Uvh" and so forth. This of course didn't give me anything java in FF. So I go into /home/myhome/.mozilla/plugins and I create a symbolic link libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-sun/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so I also make sure that the "java -version" output from a console points to and uses the same java. This is done through /etc/alternatives/ where I moved a symlink that pointed to some obscure IceTea thing. It now points to lrwxrwxrwx 1 vk users 35 10 aug 23:50 java -> /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-sun/bin/java which is the same java as is used by the plugin. And....java is enabled in FF. The browser has been restarted as has the entire machine. If, in a console, I give "java -versione", I get: java version "1.6.0_15" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_15-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 14.1-b02, mixed mode) I'm completely flappergasted (:-)) at this. Any ideas as to what I'm missing? I just got a call from one of my friends (whom I consulted earlier on this matter) saying: "Remember also to fix /etc/alternatives/javaplugin." This symlink should also point in the right direction. My javaplugin symlink was pointing to some IcedTea, it now points to the SUN java directory. And everything is now working. Q: If it had only been written somewhere...CHECK YOUR SYMLINKS IN /etc/alternatives/! I hope my answer gets picked up by the search engines in order to help others :-) -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, you are shot-gunning and that is "not good". There is an app for setting java, update-alternatives, and *much* has been written. Have you search on opensuse.org? You remind me of a friend who is getting along in years, even more than me. If something on his windoz machine doesn't start as quickly as he thinks it should, he clicks on it six or seven more times, and then cannot understand the problems that ensue. But he is only 89 :^). -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

- I apologize for my hot headed behaviour... - I actually thought "there must be a more correct way..." instead of hand-fixing all these symlinks in /etc/alternatives which was quite frustrating - in part also because I didn't understand it fully. Or was afraid that I didn't. This application "update-alternatives" is a gem! I only knew that I had known of it. I tried running it with "update-alternatives --config java" and it appears to agree with my (manually done) settings. After your advice I did search the openSusE and sure enough, there is a fine explanation. If I had followed it, it would have worked in the first shot. I hope the search engines find *this* entry :-) Thanks a lot for your help! -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

A powerful little piece of the sys-admin toolbox. There are numerous of these gems that never seem to get any prime-time air-time despite the fact it would be a better use of Internet bandwidth then yet more Shuttleworth-comments-about-XYZ or oh-my-was-Linux-rude-to-someone bilge articles. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
