[opensuse] Installing KDE 4.5

Hello, I'm currently running Suse 11.3 KDE 4.4 but want to try out the 4.5 RC series. Can anybody tell me how to do it? And will that break my system? I don't have any graphics card so graphics driver won't be a issue for me I reckon. Looking forward to your answer. -- I am me, I wanna be me. Junayeed, I haven't done it yet, (install vanialla kde4), but if I were going to do it, then I would remove the kde4 package group and then follow the install instructions at kde.org. However, you may want to hold off on 4.5 unless you just want to wade in and help catch bugs, etc.. (which you are very welcome to do), I have been reading about some growing pains for the current 4.5 packages on the Arch Linux list. If you are interested in helping, then load away and please submit all bugs to bugs.kde.org. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Ummm... not the easiest solution you've given there David. :-P The KDE 4.5 repos are here: http://en.opensuse.org/KDE_repositories#Factory_.28KDE_4.5.29 Simple to upgrade. The high-level basic steps are (assuming you have knowledge of how YaST software management works): 1. Add the 3 repositories for your openSUSE release. 2. For each of the 3 KDE4.5repos set the Priority to a number lower than the default... eh, set to 50. 3. On the Repositories tab in the YaST software manager, Select each of the 3 new repos and then click the link "Switch system packages". This will auto-select all the KDE4 packages to be upgraded. 4. Resolve any conflicts - you might encounter one or two depending on what you already have installed. 5. Follow through the install, log out and log back in. Will it break your system? Well.. there's always a risk of things breaking if you're running Factory releases. The KDE4.5 releases have had some issues with Xorg going crazy and eating up CPU... depends on video driver and a bunch of other factors. I'm running KDE4.4.95 (latest from the KDE4 Factory repo) and it's running fine (I did find I needed to do some options tweaking to keep CPU load down to normal while idle, and this is well documented in various bug reports at kde.org). I got 3 options there. Should I use zypper ar with all 3 repo?

I didn't get what you're trying to say. Please do explain.
3. On the Repositories tab in the YaST software manager, Select each of the 3 new repos and then click the link "Switch system packages". This will auto-select all the KDE4 packages to be upgraded.
There's no repository tab in my yast software manager, bro.

Yes add all three either by zypper ar or via YaST.

- Open YaST software manager - Click Configuration > Repositories - If you've already added the 3 repositories listed on the Wiki page, select each one of them and set the Priority of each one to some number less than 99 (the default), and less than your current KDE4 repo priority (which is also 99 unless you've changed it)
3. On the Repositories tab in the YaST software manager, Select each of the 3 new repos and then click the link "Switch system packages". This will auto-select all the KDE4 packages to be upgraded.

Click View > Repositories and you will see the Repositories tab. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
