Customer has a Compaq 6400r twin PIII Xeon server. During POST, the BIOS reports both processors as A-OK, but, SuSE 8.2 installer only "sees" CPU0 and installs the default kernel. Installing the SMP kernel with YaST doesn't help; even then only the first CPU is seen by the system. Both CPUs are of the same stepping. Ideas? Thanks! Mark L. Please post a: # cat /proc/cmdline And maybe, try to boot with "acpi=off". -- Andreas
Andreas, Thanks for the prompt reply. To answer your second request, booting with acpi=off has no effect. To answer your first request, # cat /proc/cmdline yields: root=/dev/ida/c0d0p8 vga=0x317 splash=silent acpi=off splash=silent Still no joy. What next? Thanks! Mark L. I am not sure about Compaq 6400r but older Compaqs used to have different settings for SMP in BIOS. Linux kernel did not recognize second CPU when that setting in BIOS was incorrect. Regards, -Kastus
Andreas, I solved this problem by searching various Linux discussion groups. Kernel-smp had the most examples. Apparently, this is a common problem with Compaq servers related to the Compaq BIOS and the Kernel, and having nothing to do with SuSE at all... In addition to booting with apic=off, apm=off and pci=biosirq, it is most important to set the Operating System parameter in the BIOS (accessed via F10 at boot, or by booting a Compaq SmartStart CDROM) to "SCO Unixware 7". (Probably SCO is using this in their lawsuits--only half joking!) Once this was done, both the 8.1 and 8.2 installers chose the SMP kernel on their own. Thanks again for your help. I hope this info makes its way to a SuSE Knowledge Base article at some point... With best regards, Mark L.
