[opensuse] natively supported external wireless cards?
Hello list, I have a cow-orker here who bought a new HP pavilion laptop to use as a media center server. It came equipped with vista, and he fought with it for awhile, then installed xp, and fought with that for awhile, and finally asked me if I could lend him a linux install disk. Opensuse 10.3 installed nicely on the laptop, and just about everything works - the one important thing that does not work is the wireless. It's a new atheros chipset that's not yet supported, and even ndiswrapper bombs out with it. Bottom line is, this guy is impressed with linux, and would like to find a way to make it work, rather than going back to windows. The only thing I can think of, to get past this situation with the unsupported wireless, is an external wireless dongle. I've been spared this pain because all my laptops have had intel wireless, and everything just works. So, what sort of usb wireless dongle is recommended? Which ones work well, out of the box with suse 10.3, natively supported, without ndiswrapper? Your input is much appreciated - Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Another option (as opposed to external dongle) is to try Linuxant (http://www.linuxant.com) Working on the same principle as ndiswrapper, they might have better support for new drivers/hardware. Which Windows version of the driver are you trying? I believe you should NOT use a Vista driver with ndiswrapper or Linexant, but should use a compatible XP driver. on my acer, the card is just under a small trap with two screws alwqys make a complete check of all the hardware and how it can be changed or simply checked when buying a new computer my check: http://new.dodin.org/wiki/index.php?n=Main.Acer9410z and I changed the broadcom card (supported, but with poor performances) to an intel 3945 one with very good results (3x the range) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://clairedodin.voices.com/ http://www.clairedodin.com/ http://claire.dodin.net/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I followed the procedure on the ndiswrapper website, but after looking at the local docs, it seems that the steps I followed are essentially the same. Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So no clues, anybody? nothing supported yet?
I'm using the Airlink101 Model AWLL3055 which uses the zd1211 driver. Works fine as long as you have the firmware installed. It has a 10db antenna and simply works fine on Opensuse 10.3 on two dell laptops. So, what sort of usb wireless dongle is recommended? Which ones work well, out of the box with suse 10.3, natively supported, without ndiswrapper?

It sounds like the airlink is my only hope. What did you have to do to get the firmware installed? Does it appear in yast as a network device with no command-line fiddling? I ask this because the user is new to linux and it needs to "just work", although I can certainly help with the initial setup.
