Hi Mitja, it still could be an old bug. When I tried to demonstrate free software to our IT people some years ago (using mc) I crashed it with that exeption. I changed something like the listmode on the left side while the right was acitve. Maybe some setting from mc's config files (~/.mc/*, most likely ~/.mc/ini) is now causing this. Does it happen as an other user as well? For a cure, I'd try to move .mc ro another name and let mc recreate it. Otherwise I'd remove and reinstall the mc package. Problem is same as root or as user but under X-windows (KDE) working. I'd remove and reinstall but not working :(. Regards, Mitja On Fri, 21 Apr 2000, juergen.braukmann@ruhr-west.de wrote:

I've installed MC from every SuSE from 5.2 to 6.4 (plus RH, Mandrake, Debian, TurboLinux, BSD) and never had a problem with it. Does any other software give problems - what CPU do you have? On Fri, 21 Apr 2000 juergen.braukmann@ruhr-west.de wrote:

Well, then it was ... AMD DX2/50 on the system I used to demonstrate at work, but I could reproduce this on my DX4-100 as well. It was an odd thing and required a combination of actions, as said, beeing in the right window and changing some options for the left or so. Not to serious anyway. I havn't seen it happen again. Reading Mitja's Message brought back the memory... On SuSE 6.1 and 6.2 MC worked without problem but now on 6.4 i have problem :((( I have Pentium II 350, 128 MB RAM. For now I have problem just with MC. Mitja On Sat, 22 Apr 2000, wulfie wrote:

I can only suggest either reinstalling the SuSE kernel & modules or making your own kernel. If you have made no hardware changes the kernel is the most obvious cause of problems. My upgrade from 6.3 > 6.4 went fine, so I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong. If you make your own kernel, depending on what CPU you have, try turning off FPU emuulation - I can't imagine MC using the FPU at all. On Sat, 22 Apr 2000, mitja wrote:

The current solution seems to be to reinstall the ncurses package. I'm still
investigating what's going wrong and don't have a clear answer. For some
reason or other the linux terminfo entry seems to be either missing or
wrong, i.e. not compatible to the ncurses library.
The floating point exception could well be the result of a wrong terminfo
entry, as many entries are defined in a printf style string. Now if the
library tries to do calculations and the actual data doesn't fit the
template in the terminfo entry, everything's possible.
Reinstalling ncurses will also reinstall the terminfo data.

hi speaking about mc, i think i got a problem also. Whenever i start mc(or mcedit) it just *freezes* in the command prompt .ctrl C does not work . i have to switch over to the next VT and kill the process. i found i could stop this by deleting a file "ini" in .mc directory. But every time i startup the file gets recreated. I've got the same problem but only as a user in a virtual terminal as root (virtual term and X) it works fine. Couldn't find any relationship with ~/.mc/ini (*) on my system. Cheedu wrote:

Does it happen as an other user as well?
Hi, When I started mc on a clean 6.4 installation, it said: Segmentation fault.
For a cure, I'd try to move .mc to another name and let mc recreate it. Sorry, no good..
Otherwise I'd remove and reinstall the mc package. That didn't help either. I even compiled a new kernel. It just won't start, and I don't know where to start searching for a solution..
