[SuSE Linux] Which Graphics Card ?
Hello I'm building a new Linux box which will not be up to date but will be an improvement over my present 166Mhx mini-tower. I'm wondering which graphics card I should use with the X-server which comes with SuSE 6.0 or 6.1. The Matrox Mystique AGP G200 OEM looks as though it should do the job. Anyone know if this is OK with the X-server ? I can also get hold of ATI cards and Diamond Viper cards. I've been using a PCI (not AGP) G200 with no problems on a SuSE-5.1, but with an updated XF86_SVGA dating from Jan 1999 (pulled as a binary from generic XFree86). The original driver did not work properly, nor did the then version of XSuSE_Matrox. I should think, therefore, that the stock XF86_SVGA on SuSE-6.1 should work provided there are no problems with AGP support. The reason I use the G200 is that it is one of the very few cards that support overlays properly (i.e. you can have different colour depths in different windows -- I need to be able to have 24bpp and 8bpp on the same screen for multi-display across several machines). However, for this I have to use the commercial AcceleratedX server from XiGraphics, since none of the XF86 drivers seems to support overlays (at any rate, not from that vintage). As a matter of interest, therefore: Would any of the recent XF86 drivers, as now available on SuSE, support overlays? And on which cards? I am using the Matrox Millenium G200 AGP card now which works quite well here. I just upgraded my system to a AMD K6 from my older but quite reliable 166. Nice upgrade. The K6 percolates right along. Hello all, I just switched from a Matrox Millinium II 4mPCI card to a Viper 550 PCI card..world of difference, very nice. I hope to get a G400MAX when it's supported...but for now my Viper rocks. I bought a K6-III 400 w/ 256 megs of ram lastnight which is going to replace my PII 266 running on a very old PD440FX(chipset) Intel board and the 32 Simms. I don't expect it to be worlds faster, but a bit...I got a good deal on the parts :) Wish me luck on reinstalling ehehehhe. ;) I didn't have any trouble the 1st time w/ 6.1 :) Anyway to get back to what was the topic .. I like Matrox a lot, but the Diamond cards are pretty good and I saw a PCI 550 Viper for $80 brand new yesterday .. so it might not be a bad deal :) laters ... -- Ben Rosenberg |---| <A HREF="mailto:dragula@anet-stl.com">mailto:dragula@anet-stl.com</A> "Workstation powered by SuSE LiNUX" -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

Hi Richard I tried an ATI Xpert@Play (mach64) on VIA VP3 and VIA MVP3 based motherboards with AMD K6 CPUs. I had constant screen glitches with all combinations - not just on Linux but on Win95 too. Win95 also locked up frequently in many video games of a wide range of different types. The latest drivers for Win95 did nothing to alleviate the situation. As I discovered only too late, the fine print in the ATI documentation states that their cards are only supported for use with Intel CPUs and Intel motherboard chipsets. Looks like Diamond 4Mb Viper 330 AGP OEM or 8Mb Matrox Mystique AGP G200 OEM will do the job. Think that means the SVGA driver (according to the SuSE hardware database). There's a video chip on the motherboard that I'm looking at that uses an SiS driver but I get the impression that they a bit slow when compared with the above. I've used a TX-Pro II board with Windows 98 and it's a bit trashy (to be polite), this board is similar to the one that I intend to use. Don't think SuSE linux will like it at all. Well, I hadn't said anything yet... That's why no one mentioned them. NVidia cards are nice, I'm using an STB Velocity128 AGP (Riva128, slightly older card, but it does the trick). XWin worked great with it long before the drivers were released, and is cranking away. 3Dfx cards have 3D drivers for linux (voodoo chips, et al), but I don't know about how open their source is, and besides, the NVidia chips are faster. Unless you're on an extremely tight budget, I -strongly- recommend avoiding MB's with onboard video.
