WARNING: NEWBIE Hello all. I was was hoping someone could advise me on how to get started. Could someone point me to a good resource on file directory structure, how to install packages (is that what it's called) and general good house keeping hints? I promise to read and learn before asking silly questions in the future. Thanks you for your time, Neal ----- A tree never hits an automobile except in self-defence.

Hi, If you plan to use suse I suggest to first read the admin-guid which is available in English and other languages as well (I should do too :)) Also if you absolutely new in *nix world, pick up this in any bookstore http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/upe/index.html and read. I used this to change my brain's boot sector and enable unix on it :)) But, -as always- one of the best way to get some experience in it if you take one of your computer, download some iso image from www.opensuse.org, and install SuSE :) With this you'll get a lot of documentation too, including user's guide, admin's guide and so on L: -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
Thanks for the heads up. I am planing on installing Suse on a spare PC I have. How does it compare to let's say...Fedora. I am currently learning on that distro. Hope that helps. Neal ----- A seminar on time travel will be held in two weeks ago.
Hello Neal, I generally find SUSE to be more stable then Fedora and there are more graphical system configuration utilities (YAST) that makes it easier for you to configure your system. SUSE is a good starting point to pick up Linux and you can move on to other distros when you become familiar with SUSE. You will always be learning when you are using Linux no matter which distro you use and its a nice experience IMHO. Regards, -Jeremy On Wed, 2005-11-02 at 17:13 -0500, Neal Wingate wrote:

Neal, Here are a couple of sites that may help in your quest to learn. You can also do a google search for more "newbie" Linux sites. http://www.linux.org/lessons/ http://www.tuxmagazine.com/ regards, Lee
