[opensuse] Boot / shutdown / reboot issue on Lenovo R61 (beware - long post!)
Hello everybody, I have an annoying issue with openSUSE 13.1 64bit on my Lenovo R61, that I never had before with any of earlier versions. I tried my best to resolve it (Googleing, searching the list archives, digging through /var/log/messages...). The last thing I did before decided to post here was upgrading kernel from 3.11 to 3.13, but having no success, I decided to post it here in hope that someone could help. The first symptom I've noticed was shutdown/restart problem. Shutdown (or reboot) simply hangs forever. Even I have splash=verbose, nothing shows on screen. It's just showing console login prompt on virtual tty1. For some time esc key is still responding, toggling between this login console and the "fading out green branch with the gecko" splash screen, and after that it simply hangs and shutdown/reboot never happens ("never" in the sense of time less-or-equal 20min). I have to press power button for 4sec in order to poweroff. But it seems to correlate to another error that I get during boot process -- the snippet from corresponding /var/log/messages is appended to this message, please look below in case someone can get any useful conclusion out of it. As a side note, I would say that the whole thing looks like sort of a racing condition to me (something in the boot process happens too early or too late comparing to something else that runs in parallel). Because, this doesn't happen allways. It happens about two or three times in every five boots or so. But every time I have this boot error, I have the shutdown/reboot issue as well. These two seem to be directly correlated. Otherwise, system seem to work normally. This error seems to affect only the shutdown/reboot. I seem to remember there existed an option to switch off the paralelism of the processes during boot. I was willing to try that too, but can't remember how to do it. And yes, I repeated my install (twice) and I booted various live systems from CD/USB. They all behave normally, so I'd opt out HW or RAM failure as possible causes. I am not familiar with Bugzilla nor I am a member of other openSUSE lists. I don't know if this is a known bug, nor I found any similar case reported in various list archives. Then again, it's hard to beleive that it's only me. Please, dont'flame if this is OT, just ignore if you can't help and I'll stay silent. :-) Best regards, R.Soskic ---- here is the error that happens during boot (snipped from /var/log/messages) lines Then you should really open a bug report. Kernel crash is always kernel bug. You may try kernrel update for 13.1 which was released just recently (it is still 3.11, but who knows ...). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
