I know I am in the middle of this thread, but here goes, what is the
permission of /dev/ttyS0, did you chmod 666 to be able to use it?

I'm not sure about what you mean by "free". I have nothing else connected to /dev/ttyS0 physically at any time, and as I said root can connect to the Palm Pilot (with jpilot - I haven't tried with other applications).
