[SLE] SuSE upgrading...
File this under stupid/newbie questions: I'm running 6.2--I would like to upgrade to at least 6.3 or even 6.4 (I'm interested in checking out Helix-Gnome and know that 6.3 is what is supported). Is it easier to just get a CD from CheapBytes (or LSL) and let the install overwrite all the core packages, or should I ftp specific packages and install from root? The underlying question is this: when I use a CD of just the OS (a la LSL), what gets overwritten besides core packages? Do I need to backup my desktop and restore it after the install? And what *isn't* on the cheap CDs that I would want to purchase a full upgrade? Thanx for putting up with the newbie... ;-> -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Go the full upgrade , it has six cds , compared to the demo one , wich is only one cd. Doesent have much , the os , netscape and some other stuff. You can get a list of ewhats on the set from www.suse.com , and compare it to the LSL 2.00 dsingle disk . The full ed also comes with a nice manual and tech suport. It goes for around $29.99 in the US at comp usa and the other big stores. If you can , format the drive and do a full new clean istall. This is easier if you keep you data on a seperate drive. ie mount /dev/hdb as /data and put all the data on that drive. Then you only have to update the system os and software to your first drive. I am assembling a new platform for Linux - PIII 600 MHz, 128 MByte 133 MHz ECC SDRAM, ASUS P3V133 system board. I bought the SuSE 6.4 box set. I want to use some legacy cards with this: SCSI - Adaptec 2920 PCI (like Future Domain 16xx), Modem - US Robotic switch set 56K ISA, NIC - Intel EtherExpress16 ISA, Sound - old Turtle Beach Monterey ISA with new Altec Lansing speakers, The modem is working as I can log on and get e-mail with Nav. The install says it found the SCSI and it looks OK - since there are no peripherals attached I cannot test the SCSI. I am not sure about the NIC yet - install claimed it found it but there may be a message at boot. I will look at this later and try to get SAMBA going. Right now the sound card is the problem. I tried adding: options msnd_classic io=0x290 irq=7 mem0xd0000 ... to the /etc/modules.conf file per Figure 10.3.1 on page 266 of the English manual. I hear an audio pop when powering down but no other sounds. The audio Bell test gets routed to the PC speaker (I may have commented out some lines in modules.conf to cause this - I still need to test it both ways - there may have been no sound before). I have run SuSE Linux in the past. I was without Linux the past year but need it now for work projects. SuSE 6.4 has lots of nice new things. If I can get this last few install/config things working, I am sure I will be having "lots of fun." Suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
