Hi Folks, Does anyone have experience with USB scanners and SuSE 8.0? I've been trying to connect a Canon "Canoscan N670U" for the past few days with no success. I even downloaded and installed the latest sane/xsane which are reported to work with the Canon using the plustek backend. The scanner is seen by the kernel and is reported in /proc/bus/usb/devices. I set the vendor and product id's to match in the plustek backend, but still no joy. Yast2 finds the scanner's name, but doesn't recognize it. sane-find-scanner finds nothing. Is there something obvious that I'm overlooking? Thanks, Lew Wolfgang

Go to <http://www.hamrick.com> and check out their Vuescan software. It doesn't require SANE, and supports many more scanners than SANE does - including the Canon N670U - and offers more flexible scanning options. The evaluation version is free, and if you choose to buy it, it's about $40. Very much worth it, IMHO. I'm not connected with Hamrick in any way - except that I'm a very happy customer. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@VISI.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE
Hi Jay, Thanks for the reference, it helped. It seems that the usbscanner driver wasn't getting loaded at boot-time. The solution to the problem was to add the following line (for the Canon N670U") to /etc/modules.conf: options scanner product=0x220d vendor=0x4a9 Then, I made a file called S30scanner and plopped it into /etc/rc.d/rc5.d. The file contains: "modprobe scanner" with a file-mode of 755. Now, both Vuescan and Sane work. It would seem that the problem is with Yast2 which doesn't place the correct "modeprobe scanner" command in the boot files. Vuescan seems to be a fine product and I purchased a license for $40. Hi Have a look in http://www.mostang.com/sane/man/sane-plustek.5.html, there is the "full" story. Jaska. On Thursday 31 October 2002 17:32, Lewis E. Wolfgang wrote:

Just because it is free software, it should be installed by default? Why not just have 2 options in the package selection: 1) Install everything 2) Abort installation
In the case of a web server, I need it for mod_perl and apache
A default setup for a web-server should already have apache and mod_perl available and neither has any need for gcc. Regards Ole

Yes

If I'm running a web server and offering shell access, I may not want my users having the ability to compile things. The point being that any computer which has some sort of public access should limit what the public is able to do, and that includes compiling unvetted programs. jalal -- GPG fingerprint = 3D45 5509 D380 26A4 523E A9D8 A66A 5F38 CA43 BB0E
If your an ISP you can easily prevnt users from using GCC, but the default configuration on a free software system should include, IMO, the basic tools to compile things, especially the kernel. Ruben

Two things: 1. I agree with Togan Muftuoglu: there is no reason for gcc to be installed by default. In fact, there are many reasons _not_ to have it installed by default. 2. The proper address for requests is feedback@suse.com . Please be aware that without absolutely any reason, the readers of feedback@suse.com will be sure to ignore you. Yes thanks to a BMW rider known as David Nelson in Austin, TX You need "sane" and "xsane" maybe others for KDE. The coorect kernel modules and luck. Maybe via Yast2 - I do it direct. 1. First check the kernel source "Documentation/usb" Confirm your scanner is supported. 2. Compile a kernel or load modules for your USB chips on your Motherboard. They are known as UHCI and OHCI (I think also EHCI - senior moment) 3. cd /etc/sane.d and edit dll.conf and canon.conf to match your system. You will need to edit canon.conf to show a USB scanner. Try SuSE's "hwinfo" and look in /proc. Mine is a hp - so hp.conf looks like: #/etc/sane.d/hp.conf /dev/usb/scanner0 option connect-device 4. cd /etc/init.d and run "./sane start" with luck your scanner will work. Also try "/usr/X11R6/bin/scanimage -T" directly. 5. Optional! Start "X" and run "xsane". Do this as root first to confirm it is working. The biggest headache I have found is that almost all security issues equal headaches for users. xsane fails as a user and "su" so run it in root. Which is a bad idea!
