Installation cd cannot be mounted
Hi guys, I've just bought a AOPEN laptop (http://solution.aopen.com.tw/products/nb/1559-AS.htm) and I'm trying to install the suse 9.3 on it. The installation starts by detecting hardware and activating the usb, firewire, etc. Next, the installation stops and tells me that the installation CD was not found (or could not be mounted). Then I fall back on the linuxrc interface. The hardware panel gave theses informations on the dvd drive: /dev/sr0 and the ata_piix module loaded. I push on the eject cd button (in linuxrc) but it doesn't work. I decided to try the Ubuntu hoary live cd to see if it detects my dvd drive and the "installation" also end up with a "Installation cd cannot be mounted". So it seems that my dvd drive not supported I really don't know what to do. Do I have to upgrade the firmwire of the laptop or load a module ? If I perform a network installation, will the dvd drive be useable after ? Thanks in advance. Jean-François P.S : I don't know if this list is the most appropriate place for my question. If it is not the case, please redirect me.

Try a network install, and then worry about the DVD.

Do you where I can get the mini-installation iso (to perform a network installation) ? It is not anymore on the servers nor the mirrors. Also, a quite stupid (newbie) question. Isn't it strange that the cd boot, the installations starts and then the drive is not recognize ? If the installation starts, doesn't it mean that the the installation can use the drive ?

Sorry for the so high number of misspellings in a so short message.

You can use the 1st CD or DVD to do a network install. When it get to the first screen, where there's a menu, hit F3, to select one of the network installs. If you don't have dhcp enabled on your network, the install will give you an error, but you'll be able to enter a static IP and continue on. I don't know much about DVDs, but IIRC, with a CD, what boots initially is a floppy image, which then loads other stuff, including the drivers for the CD. The DVD is likely the same sort of situation.

Jean-François, It looks like SCSI errors are causing you to lose the DVD. You still need to log into a console during the install in order to do anything about this problem. If Ctrl-Alt-F1 isn't available, try others (Ctrl-Alt-F2, Ctrl-Alt-F5, etc.). Note that when you're already in one console, you switch to another console with Alt-F[1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9], i.e., you don't need the Ctrl-key. Use Alt-F7 to get back to the GUI.

I had a problem when i got a new mboard with sata support.I have a lg dvd writer and a samsung cdrw/dvd combo. When i boot off the samsung drive suse 9.1 would not detect my lg dvd writer. I had to boot off the lg dvd writer so that suse would detect both cd drives. The lg dvd writer was connected to hdc aswell. Thank you ken. But as I already said, I don't have the opportunity to open a console. In fact, I end up in linuxrc and there are no consoles available (in any Ctrl-Alt-F[1...9]). I have "solved" the problem by installing the Fedora Core 4. I don't have the time to investigate the problem for now. But I hope that in a near future, I could be back to Suse (though the fedora is very well polish). Thank you all for your help
