Howto install everything?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I just received 9.1 pro. This is the first time I've tried suse, I've always used redhat before. I like to just install everything, so I make sure I have all the libs and apps to build software packages. Is there any way to do this with suse? I couldn't find any option. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFApMGlMDqogpR5tkMRArXmAJ0aA7IeAV+1byW57DaQb4+T4+zjowCfXe50 soH8QZxjhJvY1u7yP7Z2XeM= =19Db -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

There is no option to do this, sadly, always has been a complaint of mine and a pal. You think you've installed it all, then you find the development packages have not been installed, some perl apps don't work, so you have to go and select various perl modules to install, all the things you would expect in apache2 aren't installed, the one problem I'm grappling with now to get php to open up in my browser, it keeps asking to save to disk. It takes ages before you can run everything you need, you keep finding stuff that's not installed, install it, find some more ....... It's the one naff thing that infuriates me with SuSE, a constant bugbear. I thought I opened a report ages ago, seems we need a volume of complaints to get them to do the obvious. If you are installing on 3 separate boxes as I am, it's a pain in the buttocks. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

<snip> Sid, With Yast you can export a list of all your packages to a .sel listing. This list can be imported when you install a new version of SuSE and when you select your software (put it on a floppy or some partition and mount that manually to be able to load it). Helps me for not having the packages i need and i find it a better apporach than to just install all packages/ garbage/ security risks. HTH, Peter

Thanks, I never noticed the export/import option in yast, I shall pass it on to Pete when he upgrades to 9.1. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

Liked your solution and awaiting my 9.1 I had a look into this user.sel file after producing this selection file. Nice to have all selected packages but they all have their version number included. How are you going to use this selection file with a newer SuSE version?

Constant - good question As far as i know i did this when upgrading from 8.2 to 9.0 - but (due to aging?) i am not completely sure - have been upgrading too much lately on different machines. When i used it t worked out very satisfactorily and i only had to add/ change some kde-packages that were packaged differently. And i upgrade packages through time so there must ave been differences in versions. Will try it again in two week when i finally can find to time to go to 9.1. Peter
