As far as I know it should work nicely, but depending on which xserver you are using you might need patches. The server from standard XFree 4.01 or 4.02 should work out of the box if they are build for a 2.4 system, whereas the driver from NVIDIA needs some patches. If you are using the NVIDIA driver you should probably contact them and ask for a patch (and maybe also ask when the driver will be open).

I have compiled the 2.4.0 kernel and all loads well but my XFree86 4.01 doesn't work now. My graphics card is "32MB DDR nVIDIA GeForce2 GTS 4x". I have it working under SuSE 6.4 with kernel 2.2.16 and the SuSE patches. I thought I would not need the patches under 2.4.0.

A lot of stuff changed in the kernel from 2.2 to 2.4. To have a properly working system it is not enough to just upgrade the kernel, you need to have a look at the Changes file in the kernel source Documentation directory and make sure you have the utilities mentioned there. This will allow you to get your system working to the command line level but it does not cover changes needed for X or other apps to work - many will work correctly, some wont. Probably X is one of the tricky ones because it depends on some kernel specific things.

Since the 2.4.0 kernel didn't work with my graphics card I tried the rpm'ed paches for 2.2.16 from SuSE and nVIDIA.

Patches for 2.2.16 are highly unlikely to work with 2.4.0. At least perform the patch manually and see which parts fail (check for .rej files). Happy hacking, \Gandalf
