I have a comp. with hot swap. I had only one hard disk working under /dev/sda, but now i added a second hard disk(both hot swap), under what device does linux recognizes it? (i tried /dev/sdb ... /dev/sdo) Omar -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

It *should* be /dev/sdb. Are you sure it's seated correctly and working? Mind you, I'm not sure how well Linux copes with hot-swapable drives... Well, the thing is that (for the moment) I cannot restart the machine. So, is it logical that linux recognize it just with inserting new hard disks? No extra insmod, no reboot, etc? Is anyone working with hot swap? How do you deal with it? I've checked all docs in linuxdoc.org and found nothing. I don't think Linux is going to recognize hot swap drives transparently, unless you have a RAID controller that handles hot swappable drives being replaced. -- Brad Shelton On Line Exchange http://online-isp.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
I don't boot off my scsi interface, but if I turn on my zip, I just rmmod and then mobprobe it... this would surely not work if sda was the boot drive Tim ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brad Shelton" <bshelton@online-isp.com> To: "SuSE Mailing List" <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Sent: Saturday, February 26, 2000 7:44 PM Subject: Re: [SLE] hot swap

I've never used scsi drives, but wouldn't the next logical choice be /dev/sdb ? But, I would guess that you would have to use fdisk to set a partition and size it on the drive first, then use mkfs to format it? Then you could mount or umount when ever you wanted. If you umount the drive, then swap it with another, you would probably have to partition and format the second. fstab doesn't know anything about the physical drive and doesn't have to. If you use the same mount point and name it shouldn't make any difference about their physical makeup. I'd love if there was something like "cdrecord -scanbus" for hot swap. I thing the answer is to reload the scsi module to see if it rescans the scsi bus and detects the new disks. I'll try that tomorrow morning because we have almost 2000 users now.
