[opensuse] Garbled/Unusable X on new laptop after installation.
So I'm writing this from Windows Vista now, becuase I'm having some major issues with openSUSE 11.0. On my new laptop (specs at bottom of post), I've freshly installed openSUSE 11.0 w/ default GNOME software selection. During the installation everything goes normal, with the exception that it doesn't detect my resolution (using 1024x768 instead of my laptop's resolution of 1600x900). After first boot, the graphical GRUB menu comes up fine, but once openSUSE boots, there's no bootsplash and the text looks like it's in an extremely low resolution (640x480, perhaps?). The real kicker is when firstboot/the graphical system is loaded, it completely begins going crazy. It goes into a gray-streaked screen, which slowly begins fading into a dark gray streaks in spots around the screen. Nothing comes up, no cursor, no text, nothing. Just that fading screen. Here's the relevent info: Sony Vaio VGN-FW190 Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8400 Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD 16.4" (1600x900) TFT All the help I can get will be greatly appreciated ;-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The only thing I can suggest so far is to boot in safemode, which should start a different graphical mode (the same one used during installation). Then try to configure X with sax2 differently. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Argh.
And in runlevel 3?
I can boot into the command line and issue commands... but trying to start SaX2 starts X and goes back to the garbled screen. -- Kevin "Yeaux" Dupuy - openSUSE Member Public Mail - kevin.dupuy@opensuse.org Meet Bob Barr - Libertarian for President http://www.BobBarr2008.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ok, ok, that's something. You just have to tell sax to ignore the previous settings and start fresh; "sax2 --help" will tell you te options. Posibilites: [ -l | --lowres ] use only 800x600@60 Hz standard mode. DDC detection is switched off in this case [ -V | --vesa ] This option will set a given resolution and vertical sync value (in Hz) as VESA standard resolution for a specific card. Format: Card:XxY@VSync Example: 0:1024x768@85 [ -s | --sysconfig ] this option tell SaX2 to import the system wide config file even if SaX2 was started from a textconsole which normaly will import the SaX2 HW detection data [ -r | --reinit ] remove detection database and re-init the hardware database If you cant's see anything, type ctrl-alt-backspace (perhaps twice) to kill it. Or jump to the text console where sax2 is still running (ctrl-alt-f1, for instance) and issue ctrl-c to kill it. Once sax2 runs and you can view it, play with the selections till you find one that works. Lets hope :-) After you succeed, test it running "startx" from the console, and if it works, exit and type "init 5" to return to full graphics mode. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
