Good day,
Just discovered a new little issue when installing onto a SuSE system. When you install Ximian and select it to start with default system boot (ack, second option after installation...).
1. KDM does not show any Gnome (maybe SuSEconfig moved things around...)
Known issue. GDM will still happily host a kde session.
2. On selecting GDM and booting into Gnome session it starts KDE 2.2.
Is there a script called Gnome in /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions ? Is there a /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions directory?
3. Init 3 and startx gnome with SuSE usually starts gnome, but again KDE
Oh. That explains everything. kde 2.2 is the issue here. SuSE 7.2 ships with kdebase 2.1.1-89. Upgrading to kde 2.2 will break Red Carpet, btw. Red Carpet doesn't know anything about rpm-4.0.3 yet. It will eventually but who can say when? Well I wish we could have warned you about kde 2.2. I dunno if you dare downgrade. Sincerely,
2.2 starts.
Not having had a chance to look more deeply into this I was wondering if you have come across this issue and have any ideas on a fix? If not then I'll try and figure it out and pass laong any hints....Although you might want to take a look at how SuSE uses Gnome, KDE, BlackBox etc...(Not sure on this myself, but with kdm you get a drop down menu to select window amanger, ot start via "startx gnome".)
Many kind regards,
Matthew Johnson
One comment and one question. Comment first: Why would a KDE upgrade break a gnome app (I'm assuming that Ximian's red carpet is a gnome app, since they are a gnome company) Now the question: After all the people here talked so much about Ximian, I decided to give it a try. I went to their homepage and followed the instructions. su to root, and then lynx -source http://go-gnome.com|sh After a bit of downloading, up pops a window?????!!!!! Normally, when I su and then run a graphical app, I get an xauth error! I then tried su-ing to root and running xmms, and sure enough it ran. I ran xhost, and it reported andjoh@samantha:~ > xhost access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect I checked .Xauthority in both /root and my user home dir, and they were not the same. $XAUTHORITY was not set. Now, there has to be something I've missed about X authority checking. How can this work? What has Red Carpet done to my machine? Anders On Friday 31 August 2001 01.17, StarTux wrote:
