Yopu should use the usermod command rather than editing the files directly. This allows you to change the name of the home directory in /etc/passwd, but you will still need to rename the directory. regards, jimmo -- --------------------------------------- "Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Hi there!!! I have a router with multiple phisical interfaces and multiple virtual aliases per interface, and I have the following problem: eth1 IP/Netmask: 211.x.y.z / 255.255.255.0 done eth1:1 ifup-wireless: interface eth1:1 is not available IP/Netmask: 10.x.y.z / 255.255.255.0 done eth1:2 ifup-wireless: interface eth1:2 is not available IP/Netmask: 212.x.y.z / 255.255.255.0 done The interface is OK, but how can I get rid of this annoying messages (think about 20 virtual interfaces... pretty lame, isn't it?) So... this messages occur only on virtual interfaces (eth1:0, eth1:1, eth1:2 and so on...) Is there any possibility to declare this virtual interfaces from Yast?!??! Because I've edited all the files by hand (ifcfg-eth1:0, ifcfg-eth1:1, ifcfg-eth1:2 and so on) SuSE 8.1 on a PIII desktop machine no wireless package no pcmcia package Thank you for any hint. Radu
I got to re-post this message, nobody asnwers it...

I am really sorry to argue, but that's what we can read at the chapter "How

Radu, What Stan is saying is that YAST can't do it but you can. Create the files by hand in /etc/sysconfig/network. Example - if you have 1 NIC but want a second address on it, create the file /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0:1 and put the following into it: BOOTPROTO="static" BROADCAST="10.118.69.255" IPADDR="10.118.69.56" NETMASK="255.255.255.0" NETWORK="10.118.69.0" STARTMODE="onboot" Replace the above with your addresses. Damian,
It looks that I was misunderstood... that's exactly what I did, and I know
how to do that exactly... but I am annoyed by that message appearing under
each virtual interface:
eth1:x ifup-wireless: interface eth1:x is not available
I just want to get rid of these messages... is there anyone who could help
me? I have 20 aliases!!! trust me, it's pretty annoying to see that warning
for each interface!!! Especially when this is a pretty important router and
your colleague (who, by coincidence is a Mandrake fan) tells you "well, in
Mandrake I have no warnings... let's replace your SuSE router with
Mandrake!!!"
Again, I have no problem declaring those interfaces in
/etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0:x or making them work!!! ...my only
problem is to get rid of those messages!!!
Regards,
Radu
