So you are basically telling me there is a database that keeps track of the pkgs via a GUI..... Gee what will they come up with next? Seems like the rpm and Yast methods are just like AIX and Smit.

perhaps you mean using package from the command line instead of the yast gui ? if that's the problem you can use the "rpm" and "rpnbuild" command from command line. you are supposed to launch "SuSEconfig" after the "rpm" commands.
If you plan to use updates from Suse thru YOU ( Yast Online Update ) ever again you MUST run /sbin/SuSEconfig at least when you finish your updates by hand, or you will be writing again asking why you get
complaints from Yast about the database being "corrupted" <G>
When you run /sbin/SuSEconfig it writes the info about your newly installed program to all the places it needs to be written in order to later be used painlessly, by you and or others . ( I forgot that step a couple of times and had my own problems w/ the corrupted database which then requires you to run rpm --updatedb or something
like that. ( I wrote it down somewhere currently unhandy <sigh> Swiss(TM) Cheese brain strikes again.. hence a reliance on note keeping. ;)
I have Suse 9.1 and I think when I run Yasr it does the configure step
at the end. At least it shows config on the screen and goes away for awhile then comes back and closes the window. Am I wrong? Maybe I am missing something. Bob Rawlinson
