[opensuse] Ejecting a USB stick in kde4
In my v11,2 laptop machine, when a USB stick is inserted, a corresponding icon appears on the Desktop, through which one can do many things, including ejecting the device. In my desktop machine, in contrast, this important and handy icon does not appear. Worse, if there is a way to eject the stick by use of anything in the GUI, I haven't found it. How can I get the same convenient icon on the Desktop machine? -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Assuming it's KDE you're using (I haven't used Gnome anywhere near enough to know the answer) add the widget "Device Notifier". I put it on my desktop, but it works well in the system tray as well. -- Michael S. The Device Notifier should be there in the bottom bar/panel by default (looks like a monitor on a stand). In 4.4 it's merged into the systray. Prior to the latest 4.4, it should be found (default location on openSUSE) on the left of the panel near the desktop pager. If it's missing, you removed it, or something else went wrong with your install or updates. Regardless, as Michael said, you can add it back as he described. Once you've found your Device Notifier, click on it to open it up. Hover the mouse over the USB device in the list of attached devices, and click the disconnect button to the right of the mounted device name. There is a handy tooltip that shows up if you hover over the it and tells you that you click that button to safely remove. You can also just open a file manager (Dolphin) and right-click on the USB device name on the left column. You will get a "Safely remove" option in the popup menu. If you're just trying to find the USB device to mount/open it... when you plug it in, it's added to the list of devices in the Device notifier. You can click on it to mount and open it from there, or you just open a file manager (Dolphin) and pick it from the list on the left. It's there. Clicking on it opens the small window that appears aanyway automatically when I insert the USB stick. When the stick is present, the window contains an icon for it, and a name for the volume. When I over on this, there appears under this is, in a smaller font, "2 actions for this device". Clicking there brings up the screen that, in kde3, would appear automatically (Open window, Do nothing, etc). I do not see a way to learn what the second available action might be, but I suppose it would be Eject. So the problem remains: How can I eject the stick? How also can I remove the extra Device Notifier windows that seem permanently displayed, whether or not any device is present. If the Device Notifier is malfunctioning, which seems likely, how can I repair it, short of reinstalling v11.2 from scratch. And as an aside, this widget (even were it to be working properly) seems to me to be vastly inferior to the version in my laptop, in which an icon simply appears on the desktop, and its menu offers quite a few options.

Ummm... if you haven't mounted the USB stick, there's nothing to "eject" or unmount... so... there is no option to unmount a device that's not mounted. If you mount the USB stick.. ie open it in Dolphin... then you can unmount it as I described.
So the problem remains: How can I eject the stick? How also can I remove the extra Device Notifier windows that seem permanently displayed, whether or not any device is present. There's nothing to repair.... it just sounds like you're just trying to use it to do something that cannot be done.. unmount/eject an unmounted device. Where did you add all the other device notifiers? If you unlock the widgets, you can right-click on any panel object or desktop widget and remove it. As well.... all desktop widgets, when in the unlocked state have a slide out tab that has an X on it... I didn't learn all this stuff from reading anything... I just tried it.. right-click is an obvious choice on almost any OS... 99% of the time, it's fairly logical if you don't over think it so much. Look for the simple and obvious... the thing that isn't so clear is how to move objects in the panel.... but you've already discovered that in a previous email thread.
And as an aside, this widget (even were it to be working properly) seems to me to be vastly inferior to the version in my laptop, in which an icon simply appears on the desktop, and its menu offers quite a few options.
It's not inferior... just different... and once you start using it, you can see its benefits. Sure it might have a few minor drawbacks, but overall it keeps everything nice and neatly packaged. I have got it now. Clicking on the icon in the Device Notifier brings up the window asking me what I want to do with the stick. From kde3, I had associated this with an unrelated action, but now I undestand I have to click on Open with File Manager, and only then to think about ejecting. Yes, this is different from what I have seen in the laptop machine (which also runs exactly the same kde 4.3.5-0.1.1 as this desktop machine), in which a simple icon, with a powerful menu, does everything in an intuitive way and in fewer steps. In other words, one can't profit from experience on one installation and predict what will happen on a second installation of exactly the same kde release. Personally, I don't think that's anything to be proud of. I think there is a real advantage in consistency, but that doesn't seem to be much valued in KDE4.. Dunno... I've installed 11.2/KDE4.3 and 4.4 dozens of times on a variety of machines (EEE PCs, misc laptops, a variety of desktop PCs, VirtualBox sessions etc) and it's the same every time. They key being that the "same" means the same exact build of KDE4... be it KDE4.1, 4.3.5, or 4.4 and 4.5Beta... when I compare the same version.. it behaves the same. Comparing 4.2 with 4.5, you will def see differences in how the desktop works. How many of the problems you're having are related to your borked install and update? (previous threads) I'd be looking there first. This install has not gone well from the beginning.. sound is not working right, your update broke half way through etc etc. The Device notifier has been changed a lot since 4.0. In 4.4/4.5Beta and 4.3.5 it operates as described in this thread. The main difference between 4.3.5 and 4.5 Beta is that it is now merged into the systray instead of being an independent widget. It is also still available as a separate widget as well... but the merge into the systray makes it much easier to find/use etc. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you for making clear to me.how to eject a USB stick.
Stan, If you haven't mounted it, you don't need to do anything to eject it - just unplug it. If it isn't mounted, nothing is written to the cache that needs to be flushed to the stick. Only *after* mounting is it necessary to "safely remove" or eject. After the device has been mounted and used, when you mouse over the icon in the device notifier you'll see the eject/safely remove/unmount button appear to the right of the icon. The situation is necessarily different for CD/DVD drives as they require the "eject" function to open the drive drawer to remove the media - with these devices the eject icon appears in device notifier whenever media is present. This is not needed for usb memory sticks (there is no drawer to open) so it doesn't appear. I am using kde4. Apparently, I already have Device Notifier. The way I know that is that I added another one from the menu, and it is identical with the one I already have; now I have altogether four on the desktop, and find no way to eliminate the excess (there are options for adding widgets, but none for abandoning them). But these Device notifiers are displayed as small windows, not as an icon as I described on the laptop, and clicking everywhere on them has not revealed a menu of actions for the USB stick, so this widget seems not to be very useful. I did find a "Help" button with some relief; clicking on it brings up a dialog window that says: "The file or folder help:/plasma- desktop/index.html does not exist". Way to go, KDE! If somebody could tell me how to achieve some control over the USB stick, e.g. ejecting it, I would be very grateful. If somebody knows how to discard the extra copies of Device Notifier, I will be overjoyed. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The version of KDE4 is important. The devs have made some significant improvements and changes from the 4.3.5 default that you get with a standard update on 11.2, and the KDE 4.4.x that youc an get from the Factory repository.
already have; now I have altogether four on the desktop, and find no way to eliminate the excess (there are options for adding widgets, but none for abandoning them).
Any desktop object can be removed (assuming widgets are unlocked) by right clicking and selecting Remove. If it's a desktop widget and the widgets are unlocked, you can also click the X in the pop out bar that shows up when you hover over the widget... applies to all widgets.
But these Device notifiers are displayed as small windows, not as an icon
Because you added them to your desktop... not the panel. In the panel it's an icon that "slides" open when you click on it.
as I described on the laptop, and clicking everywhere on them has not revealed a menu of actions for the USB stick, so this widget seems not to be very useful.
If the USB stick is not mounted.. there's nothing to do... click the USB stick in the Device notifier.. open in File manager... then it's mounted.. now you'll have options to Safely remove... this is the same regardless of if you're using the Desktop Notifier as a desktop widget or a panel widet.
I did find a "Help" button with some relief; clicking on it brings up a dialog window that says: "The file or folder help:/plasma- desktop/index.html does not exist". Way to go, KDE!
You cannot blame KDE for that. Did you install the Plasma help? If it's not installed, then.. there's nothing to display.

I guess you're overjoyed then. It's been explained a couple times now. :-P C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
