epson scanner/printer/coffee_maker recommendations
Can anyone recommend either of the following for SuSE 9.2? Epson CX 3600 or Epson RX 420 The SuSE Hardware database seems poor these days. Thanks, Steve.

If you buy an Epson printer, I strongly urge that you only use Epson inks, even tho they are prohibitively expensive. I had to throw out an Epson after trying to use "cheap" replacement ink. The heads clogged up, and it was useless. Even tho the HP printers are not as fine-grained as the Epsons, the print heads are in the cartridge, and if anything goes wrong, you just buy a new cartridge. I've used replacement inks in my Epson stylus color 880 since I got it, with no problems. same for my 600 & 660. every other cartridge I run a cleaning cycle, and I've never had a problem. inkjetcartridge.com is where I get mine. -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800 X-Request-PGP: http://home.comcast.net/~p.cartwright/wsb/key.asc

No. _Please_ the original thread! Steve.

And of course you'll find out that HP printers are virtually free, until you go to get an ink cartridge. On my Carly Fiorina special, two sets of ink cartridges buys the printer. -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd Rather Be Sailing"

Can I assume that both these machines work with SuSE 9.2 but eventually you have to buy more ink? Thanks, Steve.

And if can find them on special you can buy a new printer cheaper than buying the ink alone. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please* "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

My experience with Epson printer: I read a very good review about a top quality Epson, and then went out and bought it. Great colour photographs. Six months later, due to personal tragedy, I left my printer unused for two months. Although I had only ever used Epson ink the jets blocked and refused to clear. I contacted Epson they told me to continue the clearing technique or take it to a contract servicer (because Epson do not provide support). Well, I used up two ink pots to no avail. Expensive! Then I contacted their support contractor who told me that it would cost me 50 pounds (yeah, not dollars) to look at it, and the over the phone the estimated cost to repair was one pound less than the price I had paid for the printer. A colleague had the same problem. Replacement of the heads cost about the same as the cost of the printer. And, if you don't use the printer quite frequently they will block. So I went and bought an hp. Zero problems; but the main issue here is that the hp ink pots include a new head each time and so if they block you just buy another pot. My colleague also changed to hp. Good luck, Colin

Colin & Steve, Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe Epson has also gone to a different ink cartridge which contain new heads/jets with each replacement? I know they did use nozzles with only replacement ink, but I don't think that is the case any longer. Plus, Epson is one of the best open source supported printer brands too. I don't say this because I own one, as I actually have a HP, but to urge Steve to check it out further before purchasing. regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.8 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 Doctors office, Rome: specialist in women and other diseases.
I have an Epson 3000 & have never had a problem with head clogs...of course I shouldn't have said this out loud...the computer printers gods may be listening. Seriously I have had my Epson for at least 5 or more years and often not used it for months at a time since I use it only for color which means photos or posters for the local historical group. I did hear that if one presses the pause button before one turns it off, that parks the head & keeps it working....who knows? -- Gracia...Cooleemee, NC Registered Linux user #263390 - SuSE 9.2 Pro Choices, life is about choices -- well, part of it is. Quite right. I can't think of anything more reliable than Epson. Unless it's a laserjet with loadsa memory on a school network;-) To answer my own question, Epson have a driver in rpm format for the RX 420 all in one at: http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/dl_spc.html Takes a lot of googling, but it's there. Cheers, Steve.

I know this thread is already a week old and seems to be finished but I would like to comment anyway steve wrote: the problems with the print head. The Epson that my sister-in-law had developed problems with the print head and had to be serviced. It was also VERY noisy. The HP 932 that I got for her replacement has been working fine for several years. Now I am not a huge fan of HP or Carly but I have had better luck with HP printers and Carly is history anyway so perhaps HP will improve? steve wrote:
