Yast2 doesn't recognize cdrom
Sorry for the length of this, but I am including stuff from various logs. I have a CDRW and a DVD drive on my machine. Boot messages show that both are identified correctly. Initially, I couldn't play music CDs, but I followed a couple of articles from the SuSE knowledge base & got that to work (enabled scsi emulation, etc.). But whenever I use Yast2 to install software from the CD's, it always wants me to put the CD in the DVD drive. It works fine so I guess it's not really a big deal, but I want to understand what's going on. Below are some excerpts from various logs: <4>Kernel command line: auto BOOT_IMAGE=linux ro root=342 hdc=ide-scsi <4>ide_setup: hdc=ide-scsi ......<snip> <6>Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 6.31 <4>ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx <4>SIS5513: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 15 <4>SIS5513: chipset revision 208 <4>SIS5513: not 100%% native mode: will probe irqs later <4>SiS735 <4> ide0: BM-DMA at 0xff00-0xff07, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA <4> ide1: BM-DMA at 0xff08-0xff0f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA <4>hda: MAXTOR 6L080J4, ATA DISK drive <4>hdb: IC35L060AVVA07-0, ATA DISK drive <4>hdc: LITE-ON LTR-32123S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive <4>hdd: LG DVD-ROM DRD-8160B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive <4>ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14 <4>ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15 <4>hda: safely enabled flush <6>hda: 156355584 sectors (80054 MB) w/1819KiB Cache, CHS=9732/255/63, UDMA(100) <4>hdb: safely enabled flush <6>hdb: 120103200 sectors (61493 MB) w/1863KiB Cache, CHS=7476/255/63, UDMA(100) <4>hdd: no flushcache support <4>hdd: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM drive, 512kB Cache <6>Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12 ......<snip> <6>scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices <4> Vendor: LITE-ON Model: LTR-32123S Rev: XS0X <4> Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 <4>Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 <4>sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 209x/40x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray

Do you have your "installation medium" set properly in yast? -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
CDRW is loaded as a SCSI device and so comes after the IDE DVD device. Have you tried using a patch CD yet - you will probably find that it fails, as I did with the same setup. There is a set of notes on this in the FAQ section on the SUSE website. -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services

Check the links in /dev. Enabling ide-scsi emulation to one of these devices after installation may have resulted in the links being "incorrect". For example, your links may look like this but may need to be switched around: cdrecorder -> /dev/sr0 to cdrecorder -> /dev/sr1 dvd -> /dev/sr1 to dvd -> /dev/sr0 HTH *** Stay legal - use Free Software! *** Courtesy of SuSE Linux and Open Source Software. If you're using SCSI emulation /dev/cdrom has to point to /dev/sr0 -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@VISI.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE
