Web install SuSe-9.2 problem
I'm trying to install thtough Web SuSe-9.2 (SuSe-9.2 and not 9.3!) Boot image (about 65Mb) downloaded and burned on CD. CD boots without problem. I want to install on a laptop in a home LAN. Manual installation: 1) When asked for IP-address I type 192.168.1.50: accepted 2) When asked for Broadcast address I type 255.255.255.224: accepted 3) When asked for gateway address I type 192.168.1.63: accepted 4) When asked for DNS server I type the DNS address of the server: accepted 5) Problem is here: when asked for IP address of the FTP server for installation if I type ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.2, it is rejected. As I don't have the numeric IP address of the FTP server what must I do? -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631

Essentially, you have all binary 1s in the masked ip address. (eg. low order 5 bits). Normally, that would be the broadcast address for a netmask of 192.168.1.63. The usable IP addresses on that subnet would be .1 through .62. Type in ftp.suse.com for the ip address it will then ask for the directory and then type in pub/suse/i386/9.2 It should continue after that to the next step. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

I remembered the instruction "host" and I managed to have the numerical IP-address of the FTP server. -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631

If your dns on your internal is configured correctly:
dig ftp.suse.com
should resolve the ip
-- Chadley Wilson
It resolved it two days ago. Normally the installation system should have happened without for me the necessity to fetch the numerical IP-address of the FTP-server because I entered the IP-address of the DNS server. @+ -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631
