[opensuse] Harmful SuSE patch is preventing CrossOver from installing
Can someone please explain the following error message that prevents CrossOver (Windows emulation) to install on SuSE 10.3 ? I installed and used it successfully up to the last catastrophe occurred two nights ago when my monitor drive was messed up again by some on-line upgrade patch. Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x7e64a90a (thread 000f), starting debugger... Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x7e64a90a). Register dump: I have also attached the error message that CrossOver installer prints out. I could recover the monitor graphics performing the following: <ALT-F2 > # pops up an xterm # init 3 # switch to runlevel3 # set graphics to a known working state # cd /etc/X11 # cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.broken # cp xorg.conf.install xorg.conf # init 5 # switch to runlevel3 This way I got a working graphics session again and could resume my project. Every application runs fine but CrossOver and JGR (GUI for R statistical package). The first time my monitor got messed up I reinstalled SuSE 10.3 from scratch losing my last week's project work. Then I had to reinstall every applications. Thank you in advance, Maura Maura Edelweiss M.

Which version are you having problems with? I had 5.3 standard installed before upgrading to 6.2 pro. Didn't seem to have a problem with either. I have got CrossOver 6.2 PRO after replacing SuSE 9.3 with 10.3. I swear it worked just fine until the malicious patch was installed.
Also, which graphics card do you have?

Appears to be a xorg.conf parameter missing/wrong which is above my head for help. Perhaps someone else on the list can help you there.

OK. I have an Nvidia card but it shouldn't make a difference. Do you have the latest driver installed from the ATI repo? -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I contacted the CodeWeavers technical support. I sent them even more detailed info than what I have posted to this list. So far I got from them two suggestions but neither one works.

Unless the installation/upgrade is automatic I think I have the original driver that was installed at the factory with SuSE 9.3 Is this the cause of my misery ? Thank you

Could be. The nvidia/ati manufacturer driver is not usually updated as it is not part of the distro. It could be disabled, though. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Sorry. I don't get it ... If I disable (I do not know how to do that, anyway...) the graphic card driver ... then what shall I expect to see on my display ? Regards, Maura

It uses the plain nv driver instead, which comes with the X server. Ie, the configuration, instead of declaring the driver as "nvidia", declares "nv". It is far more stable, but has no 3d nor hw accel graphics. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I could recover the monitor graphics performing the following:
<ALT-F2 > # pops up an xterm # init 3 # switch to runlevel3 # set graphics to a known working state # cd /etc/X11 # cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.broken # cp xorg.conf.install xorg.conf # init 5 # switch to runlevel3
This way I got a working graphics session again and could resume my project.
You could do a diff of both files to see what changed. Also, knowing the dates of both files (the original files, not the copied config) would help. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I wish I knew. Whenever I start Yast to install just 1 or 2 rpm files then it downloads stuff like mad for 1/2 an hour. I lose control of what is being installed.

I have attached (I hope) all the files you requested. How can I prevent Yast from downloading and arbitrarily installing stuff that I never requested ? Every time this catastrophe happens it takes me aweek to restore my working environment. Thank you very much for your help. Regards, Maura

monitor drive was messed up again by some on-line upgrade patch.
Which update exactly?
I wish I knew. Whenever I start Yast to install just 1 or 2 rpm files then it downloads stuff like mad for 1/2 an hour. I lose control of what is being installed.
This: rpm -q -a --queryformat "%{INSTALLTIME}\t%{INSTALLTIME:day} \ %{BUILDTIME:day} %-30{NAME}\t%15{VERSION}-%-7{RELEASE}\t%{arch} \ %25{PACKAGER}\n" | sort | cut --fields="2-" | less -S will list everything installed sorted by date; just go to the bottom of the file and see what is listed there.
You could do a diff of both files to see what changed. Also, knowing the dates of both files (the original files, not the copied config) would help.
I have attached (I hope) all the files you requested.
Wow! The dates of the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf*" was all that was required, not the full directory listing. But your xorg files are too different. I'd prefer to see both files instead, I get lost with that diff, sorry. There are some curious details: - You have 5 mouses defined. Why so many? - I think your file was manually edited, because I see "Monitor[vmware]", and SAX uses "Monitor[0]" or "Monitor[1]. It is strange.
How can I prevent Yast from downloading and arbitrarily installing stuff that I never requested ?
I've never had that problem, I always know what Yast is going to install, and I can accept, reject, or modify it. You are the administrator and the control is yours. Never use the automatic installer: use YOU, the qt version. Before saying OK to install, press the "check" button, then select the filter "Installation summary", where you will see the exact list of what is going to be installed or removed.
Every time this catastrophe happens it takes me aweek to restore my working environment.
You must find the cause, then it will be a few minutes to solve it. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. This looks very much like you lost 3D support for your graphics card during an update. Somewhere else in this thread you wrote you have an ATI Radeon (9600?). So you might want to follow these instructions to get 3D graphics up and running again: http://en.opensuse.org/Howto/ATI_Driver HTH -- Stefan Hundhammer <sh@suse.de> Penguin by conviction. I am concerned. The on-line documentation on the web site you indicate states that the driver expects SuSE kernel to be updated. How can I make sure my system satisfies this requirement ? Moreover, scrolling through this mailing list messages I noticed the recurrent subject about the last kernel updates failure or the like .... I am at a loss. I have to find a solution to this stumbling block. On the other hand I am afraid to have the kernel messed up as well. Regards, Maura

Uh - I think you misunderstood something there. Don't let the amount of text on that page scare you. It describes the procedure for a lot of different scenarios, even quite pathological ones. In most cases, this just works with what is described there as "the easy way". I am positive that this will work for your system, too. The instructions under "the hard way" describe how to build your own kernel. This is something I would not recommend you to do. CU -- Stefan Hundhammer <sh@suse.de> Penguin by conviction.
