Does anyone have experiences in running a Compaq Smart Array 3200 controller in a non-Compaq computer? I successfully run a couple of SMART-2/DH arrays, but the 3200 poses some problems... At startup, at controller POST, it takes what feels like forever, to initialize.. Then it displays the following: 1783-Slot 2 Array Controller Failure! [Command failure (cmd=11h, err=020h)] I can't find ANY references to the '1783' error code, neither can I find anything about 'cmd=11h, err=020h' anywhere! Help is gratefully accepted, although this isn't really on-topic for this list, my intention is to run SuSE 9.2 off this controller.. Anders.

Hate to break it to you but HP RAID controllers are using the system firmware more and more I would NOT recommend using HP RAID controllers outside HP machines. -- David Blomberg dblomber@davelinux.com AIS, APS, ASE, CCNA, Linux+, LCA, LCP, LPI I, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, RHCE, Server+

I know that Dave, But the fact is that the 3200 controller was one of the last that did NOT depend on the rest of the system (in fact, the Compaq System Controller board). I think, but am not sure, that also the 43xx series are usable, but when you step up to later models, you're smoked when it comes to non-Cpq/HP servers. Later, Anders.

OKay well I had no way of knowing you knew that. Being you already know the hard part a google serch with the error message turned up this http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threa... and http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threa... as it is a pre-OS boot issue even though the thread is about windows it applies to Linux as well. -- David Blomberg dblomber@davelinux.com AIS, APS, ASE, CCNA, Linux+, LCA, LCP, LPI I, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, RHCE, Server+

Hi Anders! <grovel grovel> Sometimes, I like to dust off and exercise my database design skills ;-). I dunno if these lead to a solution, but the background info might be helpful, I think. The second link mentions the error code you're interested in: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do? threadId=753787 http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do? threadId=324468 regards, - Carl

Anders, Uh oh... The long startup and the 1783 error usually indicates a failed controller. (at least it has for me...) You can try reseating the cache module, reseating the card, or booting with no SCSI cable attached, but if you get the 1783 error, most likely it's a bad controller. I've heard you can sometimes reflash the ROM to bring it back to life, otherwise it's: Smart Array 3200 Controller spare: 340855-001 64 Meg Cache Module Spare Part: 340915-001 or SA3200 controller Option Part Number 295643-B21 (this is the whole controller) You can get a used one from serverworlds.com for pretty cheap. Call and ask for Knut ("kuh-NOOT"). Hope this helps... Mark -- _________________________________________________________ A Message From... L. Mark, Dave, Carl... I've tried to swap sub-cards and batteries from three different controllers, all presents me with the same error. Batteries are fine, I've also reseated all socketed chips, no luck. When I surf the HP forums, it strikes me that there are LOTS of "1783 3200 controllers" out there. Seems to be a family sickness in that series. I'll do some more testing, even buy a couple of "new" controllers to play with. Thanks anyway! Anders.
