Has anyone here got the xcdroast non-root mode working with the xcdroast that is included in SuSE Linux 8.1? I have tried to activate non-root mode several times now, but I still cannot start xcdroast as a regular user. Best regards, David List

I can say the same David. Today I downloaded the latest Xcdroast 0.98alpha11-1 from the Xcdroast homepage. Also I downloaded: [ ] cdrtools-cdda2wav-1.11a40-1.i386.rpm 01-Dec-2002 07:35 222k [ ] cdrtools-cdrecord-1.11a40-1.i386.rpm 01-Dec-2002 07:35 645k [ ] cdrtools-devel-1.11a40-1.i386.rpm 01-Dec-2002 07:35 323k [ ] cdrtools-mkisofs-1.11a40-1.i386.rpm 01-Dec-2002 07:35 299k [ ] xcdroast-0.98alpha11-1.i386.rpm 01-Dec-2002 07:44 1.3M And uninstalled the old packages. I got it all from: http://xcdroast.sourceforge.net/RPMS/a11/suse-8.1/ And its working now.

Before I crashed the drive I was looking into the permissions for
cdrecord. It seems that xcdroast and koncd all need cdrecord as the kep
app. They seem to be front ends. I was able to get the data back and
rebuild the partitions with dd but even the Linux instructor could not
get koncd or xcdroast working on his machine. it may be a flaw in
ide-scsi.
do you have a multiple boot setup? I am thinking that SUSE 8.0 cant get
along with DOS anymore. If the flaw isnt fixed Ill need a multiple drive
computer to handle the problem.

Carl & David, I had Xcdroast working fine on both 8.0 and 8.1. In recent weeks ending yesterday, I have updated cdrdao, all cdrtools - which contains cdrecord, mkisofs and other utilities, to the latest. The cdrtools is now ver 2.0 and cdrdao is 1.17. I also installed k3b for the front end and with a minimum of trouble have it all working perfectly. So good that I have deleted KonCD, and Xcdroast front ends. K3B is just to easy to even think about the others. Making cds, audio and data are real no-brainers with K3b. Check it out at www.k3b.org/. As to running them as non-root, I think the problem is solved by setting the permissions for each backend to allow read and execution by others. K3b does it for you by seting the ownership/group to root/cdrecord. That may also solve your problem under Xcdroast. If you choose to go with K3b and have any quesions, look into their mail list at https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/k3b-user. If I can be of any help, email me at ratcheson@earthlink.net. Cheers, Richard

What was the errors? You just could not record an CD? Most of those utilities need to be set to suid for them to work. Well for me anyway. it may be a flaw in
ide-scsi.
Possibly but it might be permissions

Yes Suse and Windows98 I am thinking that SUSE 8.0 cant get

What issue is it having? Cannot mount into it? -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, We just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Me, a few days ago. If you start xcdroast from an xterm you see some error messages, warning that some needed files are symlinks. This means that when you try to activate non-root mode, it doesn't work, because it makes the changes to the links and not to the files: you have to issue these commands manually: chown root /usr/bin/cdrecord chgrp xcdwrite /usr/bin/cdrecord chmod 4710 /usr/bin/cdrecord chown root /usr/bin/mkisofs chgrp xcdwrite /usr/bin/mkisofs chmod 4710 /usr/bin/mkisofs chown root /usr/bin/readcd chgrp xcdwrite /usr/bin/readcd chmod 4710 /usr/bin/readcd chown root /usr/bin/cdda2wav chgrp xcdwrite /usr/bin/cdda2wav chmod 4710 /usr/bin/cdda2wav Warning: probably the security scripts will undo this; it would be better to enter the data in "/etc/permissions.local" like this: /usr/bin/cdrecord root.xcdwrite 4710 /usr/bin/mkisofs root.xcdwrite 4710 /usr/bin/readcd root.xcdwrite 4710 /usr/bin/cdda2wav root.xcdwrite 4710 and perhaps also: /usr/X11R6/lib/xcdroast-0.98/bin/xcdrwrap root.xcdwrite 2755 -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
