[SuSE Linux] diald problem: dynamic IP no. does not work
It shouldn't be a problem .. but I am running 6.1, just reinstalled from scratch after the upgrade from 5.3 (diald at least died now and then) was not working reliable. The problem is still the same as it was already with 5.3: When I use nslookup on the Linux box, the name server on this box auto forwards the request to a 'real' name server at my ISP. This request triggers a dial out to the ISP. While the modems are negotiating, I can see the UDP package waiting when I monitor with 'diald-top'. As soon as the modems have done their job and there is a proper connection, the UDP package (actually there are 2 in the meantime) are dropped and a while later, the original 'nslookup' tells me it can't access the name server. Now, the connection is there and the next time I start nslookup it will find the ISP's name server and resolve the name. The solution for this seems to be there, described already in an (German) article in SuSE's support db (dynamische IP-Nummern: Probleme beim Aufbau und Abbau). Due to this, the solution would be to use a variable in rc.config 'IP_DYNADDR' which can be set by yast. I have done this and I checked the result with 'cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr' which shows that there is a 7 in now. BUT: no difference, it does NOT work??? Any clues? I've used the following "echo" command to make the system hold the first outgoing packet until my system has been assigned a dynamic IP address. This has worked since I started using diald in SuSE 5.2. All of the systems on my small network us our ISP's nameserver and so anything that causes a DNS lookup cause diald to dial the modem on our gateway system. I know that you can configure packet timeout settings and stuff in the diald.conf as well. echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr
