Does anyone know of a linux equivalent to Allercalc? This is a great calculator but seems it is only available for Windows. See http://www.allersoft.com/allercalc.htm Art

Thanks for the info. I had always thought bc was before christ. Found X-bc and installed. Looks pretty good although it does not have metric-english conversions like allercalc. Maybe in the future it will have. Art Christopher Mahmood wrote:

bc(1). I'm sure there's some KDE front end for it if you want a GUI.

From The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing (09 FEB 02) [foldoc]:
BC An {arbitrary precision} numeric processing language with {C}-like {syntax}. Traditionally implemented as a front-end to {DC}. There is a {GNU} version called {GNU BC}. {Unix manual page}: bc(1).
Found X-bc and installed. Looks pretty good although it does not have metric-english conversions like allercalc. Maybe in the future it will have.
Doubtful. Check out units(1). -- -ckm

Calctool does not have the history like xbc or allercalc. xbc is OK but the UI is now where as good as allercalc. Art Donn aka N5XWB wrote:

The Admin guide that came with my Suse 8.1 professional is missing pages from 466-491. Missing half the index is very bothersome. Plus whatever else it covered. Is there a pdf version I can download? Or can I get another copy from Suse? I didn't want to pester them if there's an online copy. So far I haven't found one though. Oh, & just to add in the dumb newb question :) I'm trying to get better with the command line . I'd like to turn splash off, so my PC boots directly into the CL for a few days. If I do that, after it boots, & I'm sitting at the linux login, how do I get into KDE? Thanks, -Trey

[...] Oh, & just to add in the dumb newb question :)
Please post only one prob per mail. It's a bit confusing asking for a manual and wanting infos about the commandline too :-)
I'm trying to get better with the command line .
Good idea :-)
I'd like to turn splash off, so my PC boots directly into the CL for a few days.
Does the splash bother you? There're several possibilities: a) booting with splash into X (KDE, Gnome whatever) = default b) booting without splash into X (KDE, Gnome whatever) Disable splash in /etc/rc.config -> Done :-) c) booting with splash into console There must be a way to configure that "by hand", but I only now the "yast-way" (yast2 might be similar) - start yast (either in KDE or on the console by typing yast) - chose "administer the system" (point 5 right above 'show readme') - sorry, but I've only the german version and I don't know how it's called in the english version) - chose "Login-Configuration" - point 4) - chose "Login-Shell" (?) - first point and change from graphical to ascii - leave the rest untouched and save the new conf by chosing "continue" - 'ESC' (2x) end yast and the system will be reconfigured at runtime :-) d) booting without splash into console combine points b+c
If I do that, after it boots, & I'm sitting at the linux login, how do I get into KDE?
If you have the suse-default configuration just type: 'startx'
Thanks,
You're welcome CU Guido

booting into console: change 5 into 3 in the following line in /etc/inittab id:5:initdefault: runlevels are defined as: * 0 System halt * S Single user mode; * 1 Single user mode * 2 Multi User without network * 3 Multi User with network * 4 Not used * 5 Multi User with network and xdm * 6 System reboot don't change the value to 6 (if you do, you're screwed) Maarten

Nah,
boot init=/bin/sh
or just boot from the rescueCD
;)

The SuSE Admin Guide may be found on your system at file:/usr/share/doc/packages/suselinux-adminguide_en Both HTML and pdf fromats. IIRC this gets installed by default. Stan On Wednesday 12 March 2003 03:38 am, Trey wrote:

You can read it on the susehelp browser (html). There was a pdf version as well, I haven't checked if it is there still. There has been an update: check YOU.

No need... just press [Ctrl][Alt][F1 to F6] and you are on the text console, and you have 6 of them (plus the eror messages on console 10). Number 7 is the X graphic mode (and 8 and 9 if you like). If you want to disable graphic mode for a while, init 3 (6 for graphic). To make that permanent, edit /etc/inittab. startx inits a graphic session for the user issuing the command. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
