First off. Hello. New to the list and looking forward to participating. Background is Netware -> Microsoft -> Linux. Use to be a RedHat user (based on US region and accompanying requests. Tasked / chose to jump to SuSE as our companies technical advocate for SuSE. Thanks, in advance for those who help. Self rating of Linux knowledge is Medium. Now for the first question of the day: Migration of Windows XP to Linux for my laptop I have two major issues. 1) Spit screen in X windows. After the install it selects a ATI Rage Mobility II adapter for my IBM ThinkPad A21m. At first boot upon starting X it will have a normal looking screen except that the screens bottom 'stops' about 4cm from the bottom the top being 'cut off' and wrapping around to the bottom. The mouse is next to impossible to use as it does not line up with any of the icons or menus. I opened a ticket with SuSE support but thought I would post it here[20040322430005775]. Laptop works fine with Knoppix / RH 9 (i.e. same version of X). Tried (per XFreee user group) compile of 4.4. no fix. Tried copying over XF86.conf file but this did not resolve it. Any thoughts? 2) Second issue is related to SMB mounts. I have done it several times where I mount my (XP Laptop replicated) office documents that are on a server SMB share via Linux then sync it to my home directory. 'mkdir /media/smb' -> add host entry into /etc/hosts (ex:iaserver1 192.168.240.107) -> 'mount -t smbfs -o username=wisej, password=foo //iaserver1/Users /media/smb' -> 'mount' shows the share is mounted. -> 'cd /media/' -> 'ls' yield only directories dvd floppy and cdrom (i.e. no smb directory) with error insufficient rights /media/smb -> 'cd smb' works but gives error of insufficient rights again. Their was also a time skew error (I forgot to write that down) but I don't think it is directly related. Any thoughts? BTW: I went to http://lists.suse.com/ to search the archives prior to posting... is their no search engine interface. Suggestion would be add a link to on the list pages for 'click here to search archives'. Jeremey Wise (440)-519-6006 Systems Consultant(CNE,MCSE,CSE) Agilysys, Inc. Jeremey.Wise@Agilysys.com
