CUPS problem -- starting with lpinfo...
Dutifully following the documentation for CUPS, I'm told that lpinfo -v
will tell me what's available. Something's wrong; here's what I get:
linux1: # lpinfo -v
lpinfo: cups-get-devices failed: server-error-operation-not-supported
Google doesn't find anything for that error message.
I'm running a fairly new and fairly clean installation of SuSE Personal
9.0 with Ximian's XD2. I've got all the cups packages installed (all
1.19) and cupsd running.
I haven't been able to get into the web interface for cups yet. It
doesn't access my root id and password. But I'm trying to take it
step-by-step, starting with lpinfo.
Any help as to where to look next is greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Jim

Yes, I do read the list. Not every message and not every word, but I read it. But, more to the point, the steps outlined in the quoted message didn't help. I have AuthType in cupsd.conf set to "Basic", not "Digest", so the lppasswd command seems irrelevant. I also have the AuthGroupName set to sys and root is a member of group sys. More basically, what would cause the error message on lpinfo? Beyond authentication, it seems there's something more fundamentally wrong with my setup. Knowing what can cause that type of error would help me dig in the right area. To remind people, here's the error again: linux1:/etc/cups # lpinfo -v lpinfo: cups-get-devices failed: server-error-operation-not-supported Any help is greatly appreciated. Last but not least, you need to set up your printer. Do not use Yast for this. Use the CUPS web interface at http://localhost:631/ . If you have never used this interface before, you will have to add an admin user first by entering "lppasswd -g sys -a user". I am not sure if you have to restart cups or not after this, but it couldn't hurt. Type "rccups restart". Use the web interface to set up as many printers as needed for different resolutions setting the device to the PTAL device created above. </quote> You *do* read the list ??

Well, if cups says it cannot do the operation (as quoted), I would restart cups (/usr/sbin/rccups restart) and try again. If it still does not work, I would consider reinstalling cups. If that does not work, perhaps you need to reconsider the 'Basic' authorization. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711
IIRC, you are trying to set up a server with the personal version of SuSE. Again, IIRC, that is not supported. I could easily be wrong, but this time I don't think so. --doug /snip/

I was avoiding "Digest" in hopes of keeping things simple, but -- alas

You *may* be able to change back to "Basic" after you have made your configuration changes. I have only used "Digest" and cannot comment past that. gud luk -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711
