kmail (kontact) threaded view
Hi everyone A bit off topic, sorry! I am thinking of switching from thunderbird to kmail, because of the lack of calendar (I know about the mozilla calendar plugin, but I do not want to have to open them both to get reminders, and having 2 windows open when one could do etc...) I was really impressed with kmail and some of the tricks it does, only problem is threaded view. With Thunderbird, if you have a thread collapsed and get a new mail in it, the thread becomes "bold", so you know where the new mails are. In Kmail, all you have is an indication that there are x new messages, you will then have to expand each thread to find them - there must be a way to do this! I tried evolution as well, but it crashed twice while i was importing mail and playing, so not too sure about it! Thanks, H

Not really, though perhaps a bit more on-topic in the SuSE-KDE list. Perhaps.

Good choice.

Yup. There is.

Here's where to look / what to do: - KMail -> Settings (menu) -> Configure KMail - Appearance category - Headers tab - From Message Header Threading Options (middle section) select: "Open threads that contain new, unread or important message and open watched threads." Randall Schulz

Is there any way to just make them bold, or a different colour? Even if they are expanded, it is more tricky to find unread items. I like to keep them all closed, scan for interesting threads, then expand, it keeps things much simpler!

Unread items are a different color. Red when new. Blue when unread but no longer new. Randall Schulz

In the upper right corner there is dropdown box for filtering the view. Select there Unreaded. Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

I dont think I am explaining myself properly... When the thread is not expanded, only the first mail is visible. Any mail under the first mail is not visible, so it does not matter if it is a different colour, shape, size etc. Try it out if you use kmail - go to the folder where this list gets to, click the "folder" menu, click "thread messages". you now have a + next to the threads to expand and contract the threads. Collapse a thread and you will see that only the first message is visible. Now expand the thread and mark one of the mails as unread. It turns blue/red/green/bold/whatyouconfigured. Now collapse the thread. There is no way of telling that the thread contains an unread message. Maybe I've got a buggy install, or Im doing something wrong?

I found this subject on the KDE wish list, but apparently it is fixed!

You explained pretty well. I do not know how to do this. But it is a nice feature and is a good candidate for feature request to kmail team. So, go ahead, check their bugs database, and see if it is already posted. If not, post it and provide us with a link to the request. They have voting system, so we can add our votes for that feature. It was apparently implemented in 1.6, but I and one other cannot find it. Have a look at http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38711 for more. If anyone has found the magic trick to do it, please let me know!

Ok, I added my vote for this, and now its status is changed to NEW. I would advice all interested in that feature to vote too, so the guys will pay attention. Thats why this voting system is for :) Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

Guys & Gals Settings - Configure Kmail -Appearance - There are 5 tabs across the top You can change the colors of the messages and elect to have threads any way you want them. Bob S.

I did not find any option to change the appearance of a collapsed thread with a new message in it. Could you tell me how this is done?

I've never done that. What I have set up is that when a new message comes in for that thread, it opens the thread. The new message is red and kmail jumps to that new message when you open that directory. Bob S.

I think you explained the feature you want well. I do not think it is available in 3.3.2 KDE yet. Here is a "work-around" that I use. I have assigned the up and the down arrow keys to the next unread and previous unread messages. That way I just go to a kmail folder and press the down arrow keys continuously until all the mails in that folder are read. I have found that the following key mappings work well to navigate through many emails up arrow - go to previous unread down arrow - go to next unread left arrow - go to previous right arrow - go to next This doesn't exactly solve the problem that you are running into. But, that's the best solution that I could think of to navigate through 100's of unread emails effectively. If you are subscribing to suse-linux-e then you know what I mean :). -- Osho

I added my vote. I also suggested a few other features regarding threads that I like. Here is a blurb I put in there.. I would also suggest that there should be a sorting mechanism which sorts threads based on the latest mail in the thread and not the earliest mail in the thread. Currently, threads are sorted by the time-stamp of the earliest mail in the thread. That way, when a very popular thread keeps on receiving messages - it goes to the bottom. If the sorting was based on the time-stamp of the latest mail in the thread - then a new mail in otherwise old thread would bring that thread to top (or bottom) with the other unread messages. Also, in such cases, the thread should be expanded with only the unread messages visible inside the thread. User can further click on the thread's first mail to see all the messages in thread. And, of course, all the messages in thread should be bold that are unread. These three features together makes it a lot easier to work with too many mails and long threads. How do I know? Because, Outlook implements it this way - which I have used for years now. Please don't bash me just because I am suggesting something that is availbale in microsoft product. Just evaluate this usability feature on it's own merit - you will find that it indeed makes working with many threads/messages a lot easier. -- Osho

I noticed, that when you open a folder, and there are new messages, they are red. But if you after that open another folder without reading the messages, and then go back, the unread messages in the first folder become blue. It makes sense, as it shows that there are unread, but you already know about them, while the red messages are really new :). Or something like that :) Sunny
