Hi: I have a HP Laserjet 5000 with duplex feature set up as a direct TCP port network printer. On Suse 8.1 the printer worked perfectly. I obtained a PPD file from somewhere a long time ago, installed it using Yast in 8.1, and it worked fine. In 9.1 Yast, I opened the PPD file, and there were syntax errors. There were no such problems in 8.1. I managed to fix them (just some syntactically undesired whitespace) and got Yast to accept the file. Now I can print test pages Ok. If I try to set the duplex unit parameter to "installed" in the Printing Filter Settings, it forgets the setting. If I set the Duplex parameter to "Flip on Long Edge" then I get an error message saying that the Duplex and Duplex Unit options conflict, no matter what combinations I set them to. Ridiculous. I finish in Yast then go to Acrobat and try to print using kprinter. I select my hp5000 as configured in Yast, print, but nothing comes out. No data gets sent to the printer. So I print to a .ps file. I open in Kghostview, select the two pages and print. Again kprinter runs, I click "Print" and nothing comes out. I go to the KDE Menu|Utilities|Printing Manager, Instances Tab, then Test and print a test page. It prints a CUPS test page different from the Suse test pages. Why the heck can't my applications print? I tried OOo and it too produces no output though all the test pages print. Now to vent my frustrations... This is really killing a lot of time and making me very angry. I'm just fed up with alpha grade software from Suse and KDE that is crammed with new features but not tested worth a darn. This stuff worked perfectly in 8.1, and they went and screwed it all up. This is *printing*, the most basic operation and it can't do it right. Another day of being the laughingstock of my office as all the Windows users get their work done while I waste time. Thanks for any assistance anyone may be able to offer. -- ____________________________________ Christopher R. http://linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_5000 should get you going. I'd recommend trying this instead of the old PPD you have. Stan

Thanks for the reply Stan. Update: I tried the old file because I thought the new system was screwed. Actually, I was trying to print a PDF file that was screwed. At this point I am using the "recommended" PPD file, which is working including duplexing on non-screwed PDFs. Thanks for the input. Good day! -- ____________________________________ Christopher R.
