Thanks to all who have responded to my cries and pleas for help. I have succeeded in getting the board resolution to 1600x1200. Please don't ask - it was fumbling and bumbling all of the way. It would have been impossible without the generous help that was forthcoming. I've attached the XF86Config-4 file that works to this message. The problem is half solved. Now I have to get the OpenGL drivers to work. I downloaded the correct NVidia tar balls for SuSE 7.1 and installed them. There were no error or warning messages and the boot process loaded the NVIDIA kernel module version 1.0-1251 (the correct one). But, why must there always be a but....' when I add 'Load "gx"' and "nvidia" to the appropriate sections of the XF86Configure file once again XWindows bombs. I'm starting to be fearful for what little hair I have left, I'm afraid that I'm going to start tearing it out. Ah well, tomorrow is another day. At 03:30 PM 8/21/01 -0500, you wrote:

After those early posts we were discussing it off list and it became apparent that Suse must use the file called XF86Config that was in his X directory when using xfree4. So I told him to copy THAT file into /etc/X11 as XF86Config-4 so that it would at least work in the default xfree way. Still dont know what the end result is though... I have "A" solution to the problem, not a very good one, but it lets me use the application I need, albeit at a lower resolution. The error message that I kept getting IF I attempted to boot XWindows at a resolution of 1600x1200 with OpenGL implemented was that there was no suitable screen available. However, if I run at a screen resolution of 1200x1080 I can implement OpenGL and run my application. The only difference in the two XF86Config-4 files, with the exception of "glx" and "nvidia" is the resolution (both files are attached to this note, for what they may be worth). There are also a couple of quirks that are rather annoying, for example: sometimes, not all of the time, when I switch from teh low resolution to the high the XW cursor is a dimmed out small icon with a horizontal line across the top rather than an arrow. The other annoyance is that I can seem to solve this problem by rebooting the system. Is the solution upon which I have stumbled and bumbled an elegant one? No! Is it simple?? No!! Is it esthetically pleasing??? No!!! Does it work???? Barely!!!! I rather imagine that my resident Maxwellian Demon is sitting there in his hiding place in the CPU laughing his head off! At this juncture in the space-time continuum I'm really confused, my mental entropy is close to a maximum value. Any insights/proper solutions will be most appreciated. Thanks is advance At 09:24 PM 8/21/01 -0400, you wrote:
